I made a huge mistake. Austin in the Covid summer. Help.

I impulsively made flights to join my husband on a business trip with my kid the end of August. Now Covid cases there are rising and I took a look at the temperatures. Oof. Looking for help to find a great hotel with a great pool and good location and see a site or 2. [more inside]

Lower-risk bathroom options on I-77 South (US)

We have to drive from Cleveland to the Asheville, NC area on Monday. We are trying to avoid the enclosed, potentially aerosol-virus-laden environment of public restrooms. They might be unavoidable for two adults and a 9yo girl, but I’m hoping that you will have some good tips about less-traveled options, places with great ventilation or some other ideas. We’ve never made the trip before and, you know, pandemic. It is not, unfortunately, optional, so any “don’t travel” advice is not going to be helpful.

Where can I park near Chinatown in Houston?

I planned a dumplings date in Chinatown (9900 Bellaire), this Saturday at noon. I bet it's going to be nuts. Coming from Medical Center / Midtown, should we park my car somewhere nearby and take a lyft for the last mile? Where should we park?

Deck the halls with boughs of Creosote

My little brother won't be able to make it home to New Hampshire for Christmas and Chanukah this year - he's stuck in El Paso. I'm looking for ideas of fun local things that I can get him, especially related to fresh baked goods and breakfast? [more inside]

Hikes and/or natural beauty within 100 miles of Houston

I have some free time in Houston coming up and I’d like to spend it making day trips to the great outdoors. Closer to Houston is better but anywhere out to a 100 mile radius would be fine. Any suggestions?

A southwestern desert hiking experience I can have without a car...?

I would like to have a peaceful soul-cleansing desert hiking experience somewhere in the American southwest during the first 10 days of December. I would be flying in from New York and without a car. Does any particular destination come to mind for this? [more inside]

Help me maximize our experience visiting Space Center Houston

What should I do to maximize a mid-October visit to Space Center Houston? We will be staying at a nearby hotel and using uber. I have tickets for the Level 9 VIP Tour, which includes Space Center Admission for the next day. We are interested in seeing any iconic displays, Saturn V, mission control, space shuttle, Gemini/Apollo capsules, etc, and have no interest in gimmicky ones like Galaxy Lights. The more detailed and adult-oriented space, science, and engineering content the better. [more inside]

Texas Hill Country Bachelorette Party

For her bachelorette party, the bride would like to fly into Austin for a night and then go to a Texas Hill Country resort/ranch for a long weekend. I think this is a fabulous idea, but know nothing about Texas. Any recommendations for resorts/ranches in that area? Any tips for making this an amazing bachelorette weekend? [more inside]

Short-term car leasing / subscriptions

Have you leased (or "subscribed") to a car through Fair or Canvas? What was your experience like? Bonus if you, say, got in a minor accident, or needed roadside assistance, and can speak to either company's handling of it. [more inside]

How to spend 10 hours in Houston burdened with luggage

Due to flight cancellation, my wife and I must exit our Houston Airbnb at 11 AM this Friday but our flight doesn’t leave until 11 PM. We have no car, but have two rolling luggage bags to deal with. Can’t leave bags at Airbnb. Can we check bags anywhere anymore, or what can we do with bags in tow that isn’t a huge hassle? Please save us from 10 hours waiting at the airport.

Can I live without a car in Houston? Relocating from Boston

My partner has received a very good job offer in Houston, and we are considering relocating. We currently live in the Boston area and live, work, and shop within a 3-mile radius of our apartment. We walk, bike, and take public transit everywhere we go. This is all very easy to do in Boston. Is it at all possible to live a similar existence in Houston? [more inside]

Vacation in the time of government shutdowns

I was supposed to go to Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands this week, but they're closed due to the shutdown. I was also hoping to go hiking in Guadalupe Mountains NP, but it's like 25 degrees with freezing fog (yikes!), which is not my preferred hiking weather. So...what should we do instead, in the general area of El Paso? [more inside]

Big Bend must sees

My main squeeze and I planning a 4-day river trip through Boquillas Canyon on the Rio Grande in Big Bend Nat'l park. The trip will be bookended with a day or two to explore. Where should we go? Camping, hiking, cool stuff to see, etc. We like water and dramatic sights and stunning hikes of any intensity. [more inside]

Help me avoid "The Algorithmic Trap" in Austin, TX.

"Algorithms are great at giving you something you like, but terrible at giving you something you love"...we're headed to Austin at the end of the month (9/24 - 9/28) and would really like to avoid the touristy kind of crap that makes every place you go feel just like every other place you go. You think Austin's amazing, right? Well, I'd love to hear about those not-so-glamorous things that made you fall in love with it in the first place...I'm looking for the types of restaurants, activities, etc., that you know are freaking GREAT, but are probably NOT sitting at the top of some list of "The top 10 things that you HAVE to do while you're in Austin".

Things to do (and not do) in Austin the last weekend of SXSW

I will be in downtown Austin March 17th and 18th with the late afternoons and evenings free. It won't be worth buying a SXSW pass for that limited amount of time but I know there's usually other events that run concurrently (as well as St. Patrick's Day).
