Where to eat in San Juan

I’ll be spending a few days at La Concha resort in San Juan, PR and would like to eat amazing food that locals eat. The nearer to the resort, the better. Where should I go?

How do I get around Puerto Rico in November as ethically as possible?

A: Are there any major concerns driving to Aguadilla from San Juan these days? How about El Junque? Is the ferry to Vieques functioning? B: Anybody know of anything useful I could be doing when I get there? I will definitely have to spend at least a little time doing touristy stuff, but would feel better if I could usefully do a day of work. I have some skills in both the trades and IT. [more inside]

Seeking San Juan recommendations

My husband and I just booked flights for a 6-night vacation in Puerto Rico in early March. Now we need to figure out the rest of the logistics. We are flying in and out of San Juan so will likely look for hotels there, but it seems like there are a few distinct areas to choose from. Any recommendations? [more inside]

Stressed out, overworked parents need a place to stay in Puerto Rico

Mid-March my husband and I are going on our first real vacation - no kids, no sleeping on friends/relatives pullout couches, no driving 12 hours, no camping in a hay field watching music for days...We need some R&R that involves warm pools, nice beaches, and a cozy place to read a good book. How safe is Carolina/San Juan, Puerto Rico?

I am going to an April wedding at the Marriott Courtyard in Carolina, Puerto Rico. I can stay at the hotel if that's the best option, but I did see some neat-looking Airbnbs that are in the walkable area of the hotel. How safe is this area of Puerto Rico? [more inside]

Getting to Vieques: Is it a hassle? Would we be missing out?

I've read all of the MeFi threads about Puerto Rico and I'm trying to figure out if an excursion to Vieques makes sense for this trip. So many people have told us to visit Vieques (and MeFi seems to confirm this), but it seems a bit expensive to get there ($400 for two people is expensive for us for a flight). I'd also like to get some opinions on whether Vieques is worthwhile for a 2 or 3 night stay, as opposed to spending more time elsewhere in Puerto Rico and saving Vieques for another trip? How are Puerto Rico's highways for night driving?

My wife and I are heading to Puerto Rico for a few days, and plan to explore the island and see a couple baseball games. One is in Mayaguez, but it's only just occurred to me that means driving back to San Juan at probably a little before 10pm. We live in the middle of nowhere, so I'm used to hours-long drives home late after we do something in the city, but my only experience driving in PR is from San Juan to the rainforest, during the day. Are highway conditions OK for driving at night if I only have tourist Spanish and don't really know where I'm going? I'll have an iPhone, but should I spring for the GPS with the rental car?

When to buy tickets for a Christmas trip to Puerto Rico?

Planning to spend a week around Christmas in Puerto Rico with my wife and two kids. Have been watching airfare from DC - has been pretty consistent at about $350 RT. Exact days are flexible, so flying in and out on Wednesday to take advantage of cheaper mid-week fares is fine. Do I pull the trigger and buy now, or do I have a reasonable chance to save significant dollars by waiting?

Where to stay on Vieques?

Mr Bellastella & I are going to visit Vieques this fall. We had a lovely experience in Culebra two years ago, stayed at a small guesthouse and loved it! Vieques looks like a place we will really enjoy, and we like the idea of a room or casita, or guesthouse. We're looking at Esperanza, but that's not written in ink yet. [more inside]

We (my husband, me, 4 year old kid) are thinking of going to Puerto Rico for a week in early-mid March. We know almost nothing except that we want to not be cold for a few days. Where do we start? Is this a good idea or is the snow affecting our judgement? So many questions. [more inside]
