Slow travel: The solution for jet lag?

As you'll remember from the zombified stare of Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation," long-distance jet lag ain't no joke. When traveling between New York and Tokyo, day and night are reversed, and the symptoms--extreme fatigue, digestive issues and depression--linger for two weeks. Obviously, the culprit in jet lag is the jet. Take away the jet, and you take away the lag. Nobody suffered from jet lag in the age of Ferdinand Magellan. So, slow travel is the key. [more inside]

Honda Fit transmission failed. Fix it or what car should I get?

My 15 year old much-loved Honda Fit's transmission is not shifting gears or driving. While waiting for an estimate from our mechanic, I am deciding what $$ will be worth fixing, or what car to get if it's not worth fixing. [more inside]

Recommend a travel stroller for a toddler and kid?

Can you suggest a travel stroller that will comfortably carry a toddler (age 4, 35lbs / 16kg), and ideally allows occasional rides for a little kid (age 7, 55lbs / 25kg)? Also need to be able to easily schlepp it on planes and taxis.

What to do on cross-country road trip?

My millennial son and I are planning a cross-country road trip for three weeks in April, and want to know about things we shouldn’t miss along the way. We’re interested in history, local culture, easily accessible nature attractions (walking but not hiking), architecture and in particular, places where movies/scenes have been shot. Also anything weird. [more inside]

Need something to see/do on this specific route from VT through NH to MA

On a day in early May I will be driving from Waterbury, VT to Concord, NH and then ending up in Woburn, MA. Along the way we were going to do the Flume Gorge Trail at Franconia Notch, but now two people in our group have injuries that make that impossible. What's something we can see or do along that route that isn't a stair-filled hike in a gorge? [more inside]

Visit Portland neighborhood recommendations

Spending 2 separate nights in Portland - parent and two older teenagers. What neighborhoods should we stay in? Cool hotels? Looking forward to great restaurants of any cuisine with veggie options, and the teens like thrifting/non-mall shopping. We’re visiting from coastal Southern California and will have a car.

Need recc's for 2-3 days' stopover in the Pyrenees

We'll be roadtripping along the Spanish border from West to East, and only have a 2-3 days to visit the Pyrenees en route to Barcelona. We're reasonably fit but prefer some not-too-challenging hikes. We're also expert horseback-riders if you know any stables. We'd like to stay close to the border, preferably on the Spanish side. Pls give all advice for a good home-base town, specific trails, hot springs, inns, or can't-miss experiences! Thanks!

Chicago lunch spot with high, private booths?

I am looking for a restaurant in Chicago, either close to downtown or in Hyde Park, which is open for lunch on Mondays(!) and has high, fairly private booths conducive to quiet conversation. I'd prefer to avoid steakhouses, but am otherwise open on both cuisine & cost. Any suggestions?

The Azores? Where to stay on Sao Miguel and how to divvy up time

My husband and I are spending 10 days in the Azores in Mid May. Right now, we are planning to stick to Sao Miguel but we are open to hearing other options. Should we stay in one place for the whole time or divide our time between 2-3 different places on the island? Where? Does anyone have specific lodging recommendations? [more inside]

Nice in July

We are going to Nice (France) in July because both kids are francophiles. They will be 11 and 14. Our interests are to experience French ways of doing things (14 yo wants to sample all that the boulangeries have to offer, for instance). And we tend towards amusing modern art, Japanese food and nerdery, well, food and nerdery in general, interesting non-stuffy museums but also maybe having one day on a beach. Hit me with recommendations please? [more inside]

NYC Agenda for 1 Day with 12 year old, details inside

I am seeking specific suggestions for places to go during a surprise 1-day NYC visit for my kid's 12th birthday in early April, focusing on things a kid into video games, manga, anime, candy and especially Japanese candy, boba tea, blind boxes and horror movies/spooky stuff, etc. would like. He likes, and I say this in an affectionate complimentary way, 'weird' neighborhoods and people, street art type vibes versus museum art, offbeat stuff. [more inside]

(How) can I remove the hood & tail logo ornaments from Tesla model Y

Would you, could you with a 2005 Prius?

I’m thinking of spending $4,000 to $5,000 to put a new battery in a 2005 Prius that hasn’t been driven since 2020. Good people of Metafilter, should I even consider doing this and, if so, what else do I need to know before making a decision? Additional pertinent details inside… [more inside]
