Roller Derby Name Nominations?
February 7, 2013 11:32 PM

I am looking for a hilarious/punny/sassy/yet menacing roller derby name! My fresh meat teammates and I are having our first scrimmage this weekend, and I need to come up with a name, post-haste!

A bit about me:
- Blonde
- From Northern Ontario, Canada
- Hobbies: Skiing, piano, cooking (love food!)
- Pets: Cats, Rabbits
- Childhood fav. toy: My Little Pony
- Favourite Books/Authors: Catch-22, Life of Pi, Black Beauty, anything by Carl Hiaasen, Saki
- Education: physical geography, natural resources, agriculture
- Fav. Music: Old and new glam rock (David Bowie, Lady Gaga), blues rock (White Stripes, Black Keys)

Anything that is clever, or that would be fun for the emcee to shout is great. Usually, derby names combine a glam femme name with something menacing (eg. Mirambo [player in my league] ), or wind up as a play on words/pun (eg. Leia Hurtonya).

Names I've got in mind...
Estelle Hurtz
Holly MacRell
Leigh King Bludd
Robo-Bunnie

I love double entendre, - however, it has to be clever enough to pass around children (or be written in a newspaper).

So please.... Sock it to me, Hive Mind!

Is the league in Canada? First thing that popped into mind was Canadian Breakin' but if everyone else is Canadian, that doesn't work quite as well.

NorthernAutumn: Top Fall

Love Food

I like "Leigh King Bludd"

My wife (Nancy Spinatra) says there is a worldwide database of roller derby names that you can look through.

bink:Yep, Canadian league in Ontario - it would work, I haven't seen that one before! :D

parmanparman: Thanks for the link, I'll be cross-checking there to make sure I don't copycat anyone.

Should mention, funny number combos are welcome too (eg. DV8)
(Heck, if a name just makes you snicker, send it in!)

Are there rules about taking a name like Queen Bitch?

If you go with a My Little Pony Reference your name must be: Pound Cake (get it? POUND cake?!), or there's a North Star, Scootaloo, Spitfire, Whizzer....Catrina Witchweed for an evil name?

It wouldn't fly in my league - they tend toward PG options. Something like Queen Beach wouldn't fly either, as the emcee might refuse to say it at some matches.

Mabel Syrup and Canadian Breakin' are getting a lot of love so far!
And Bunny N. Glide is really cracking me up - its rabbits, derby and old skool gangstas all in one :)

Due to snowstorms here, the scrimmage is being postponed. Gives me a bit more time to pick; please, keep em' coming!

(My gosh, you all are too funny!!)

Don't forget to think about what your name will get shortened to!

If you're in a pack or a paceline, skaters aren't going to call out a full name -- the announcers will say your full name, but your league is really going to only use part of your name.

Imagine if there was another girl in your pack with the name you're thinking about -- if you had to tell her the jammer was coming up, what would you shout to get her attention? It's probably going to be the easiest, shortest way to say the name ("LEIGH!" "MABEL!" "BUNNY!"), and that's probably what your league will end up calling you.

Also, think about your jersey or your helmet! If your name is really long, it's going to be harder to fit on a jersey or scrimmage shirt. "She Who Must Not Be Named" from Rocky Mountain had "She Who" on her jersey, for example.

Assault St. Marie is the best. I rescind my suggestions and throw my vote behind this one.
