100% cacao powder whipped into extra creamy oat milk with a splash of vanilla is my chocolate treat in my otherwise sugar-free life. What surprise flavor would you try with the the cacao?

I'd specify BLACK cardamom - smoky and camphor. Works with coffee as well.

Splash of rosewater and rum. The rosewater brings out the woody notes of the rum and the chocolate enhances the flavor.

Toasted sesame oil is DEVINE in hot chocolate. Just one drop.

Or a teaspoon of Tahini.

This isn’t a beverage but I love to sprinkle unsweetened cocoa powder on fresh pineapple. Heavenly treat.

Any of Vashon Coffee Dust's spice mixes would probably combine well with a cacao-based beverage. They're made to be mixed into coffee. You definitely don't need to buy them, but you could look at them for inspiration.

My favorite chocolate bar is lavender and rose. I think would be good In your chocolate drink.

I'm sugar free and by that I mean no processed sugar of any kind including agave, honey, etc. and also no fakies. So the only sugar I get is from food. To me the sweetest things you can have are bananas, apples, and dates, so I puree them or make smoothies with them when I want a treat. My fave smoothie of all time is a frozen banana, some almond milk, cacao powder, vanilla bean, and a couple of dates.

chipotle (or anything hot & smoky)
coffee (too obvious?)
maple syrup (if not too sugary)

I love chocolate with a kick, so I'll say black pepper to go along with the ginger already mentioned. And there are all sorts of different options in that pepper/ginger kick family of flavors.

For subtler flavors and fragrances, pecans (raw or roasted) pair really well with chocolate. If you have a spice grinder, you can whizz a single pecan half to a fine flour that will suspend nicely in your oat milk. If you're using a blender, even better—add a pecan or any other nut to your liquid mixture and let the machine do the work.

I forget where I learned this, but I have a routine of making a sort of "turmeric latte" that's just turmeric (fresh or dried), a single peppercorn, 1-2 pecan halves, and a mug of hot water. Whizzed for 30 seconds in a powerful blender, with or without the addition of a date for sweetness, this gives you a surprisingly nice, light, refreshing drink. I imagine you can cocoa-tize this recipe, keeping the turmeric and replacing the water with your oat milk. I might need to try that this afternoon!

All the chai spices! Cinnamon, cardamom, hint of nutmeg and cloves. Basically anything that works in chai (or mulled wine for that matter, try orange or something citrussy as well) will go well.

You can cold brew cacao grounds the same way you can with coffee.
