Untouristy tourists.

We are going to Kansas City in December with our almost three year old. We've never been there and are looking to fill a couple of days. In travel, we look for things that are interesting, different, and off the beaten path. What do you recommend we check out in KC keeping in mind that we will have our little one with us? We will have our car and aren't limited in any way with the exception of nap time from about 1-3 (which we can flex).

Have you cycled the Katy Trail (even better, with kids)?

After getting good AskMe advice on bike adventures in Glacier NP and the Natchez Trace Parkway, I am looking for tips and tricks on cycling the Katy Trail (with kids). Have you done it? How was it? What advice do you have? [more inside]

What to do in Mexico (Missouri, that is)?

(Asking for a friend) We’re headed to Mexico MO next weekend for the eclipse. Rather than fight traffic, we’ll be arriving on Saturday. So what do we do when we’re not watching the eclipse? We like interesting hikes, nice restaurants as well as dives/local gems, and anything on the quirky side or unique to the area.

KC knowledge for an STL resident

I have lived in Saint Louis for over 10 years; my wife for 11. Neither of us are natives (so That Question has no bearing on our lives). She is in the running for a job in Independence, MO, and yes, I am gun-jumping here, but I think it's worthwhile to start gathering information about potentially living in KC. [more inside]

Considering last minute travel from NJ/NY/PHL area to STL

My family wants to find something semi-affordable for a last minute rush to see family in Missouri. Airfare is too expensive and seats are short. Amtrak looks about as expensive, and I'm worried about the reliability of long-haul train connections. Would buses work well for our situation, or are we better off driving ourselves even though we don't usually drive more than an hour or two? Special snowflakey details inside. [more inside]

Fun Ideas for Visiting Kansas City with Kids for a Baseball Game

I'm roadtripping from Minneapolis to KC over the 4th of July with my brother-in-law and our 3 kids (9 and 10 year old, high energy boys). We're staying with my uncle in Liberty. I'm looking for fun things to do in KC and on the drive up/down I35. Our primary goals are spending time with family and hitting a Twins/Royals game. Tentative itinerary and specific questions inside. [more inside]

Best Hike near St. Louis

I remember reading in an old Backpacker Magazine the Best Hikes in the Midwest, and number one was a few hours outside of St. Louis. But I don't remember what it was and I can't find it online! Failing someone finding that, I would like recommendations for a place within 3 hours of St. Louis where we could hike a couple hours and then camp for the night. [more inside]

Eat and run in Saint Louis tips

This is two-things-ism, sort of. Will be in St Louis, MO, USA, along with Ms J0 next week Monday-Thursday, staying at the Drury Inn down by the Arch. Will be in work/meetings until 5pm but would like recommendations on where after that time we could go run (Forest Park?) and also where we should go eat. We have some ideas on good restaurants (limits: Ms J0 is pescetarian) but will gladly accept your tips on the best food and drink establishments. We have a vehicle. Thank you.
