seeking information on visiting china

I'm making a week long trip with work to Beijing and Shanghai next week. Metafilter has been so awesome in fleshing out the background of history, politics and contemporary culture on previous trips to non-european destinations, it's been immensely informative and useful. [more inside]

24 Hours in Beijing?

This August I will find myself with 24 hours in Beijing. I will go to the Great Wall on a hiking trip the days after that. Any must-see do-not-miss sights? What food would you not want to miss? I tend to like food and culture and neighborhoods where I can freely wander and take pictures.

Is it Worth Going to Shanghai for a Week?

I have a free place to stay in Shanghai and am on a tight budget and wondered if it'd be worth flying from the States (frequent flyer miles) to go visit for a week. I generally am culturally curious and would like something like visiting the "Water Towns", but I'm wondering if there's much else to see and do to fill a week?

Beijing! What's good?

Mr Fig and I will be headed to Beijing in November. The last time we were there was January 2012 for a few days for our honeymoon. The last time before that, I did a semester-long study abroad in 2002. This time, we will be there for roughly a week. What should we do? Are there any good restaurants/bars we should check out? In Beijing for work, limited 2-3 hour time blocks - help me see stuff!

I am doing some work in Beijing, and I will be stuck in and around the Grand Millennium Hotel (GuoMao, Chaoyang, if that helps). I'll basically just have long lunches from 12-2 free, as well as nights after 4 or 5. I want to see... something. I have not been to mainland China before (though have visited Hong Kong), and don't speak the language. Any ideas for places to walk to, things to see, or even places to eat? It feels like a shame to fly for 20 hours each way and not see anything of the city.
