Scenic Route Finder? What’s good between NYC and Toronto

I am going from New York to Toronto and back and wondering if there is a more scenic route than whatever google maps might suggest. Would love any Mefite recs on that route for easy and delightful scenic drive routes and/or rad stopping places. thanks!

Group dinner in downtown Toronto

Looking for recommendations for a group dinner with six people on a Sunday evening in November in Downtown Toronto near or easy to get to from the Westin Harbour Castle. No major dietary restrictions, although a place with a variety of options would be best. Preferably not loud/touristy. Budget is max $75/person (CAD) although it really doesn't need to be fancy.

Manitoulin Island recommendations?

We are going to Manitoulin Island for two days, midweek. Any recommendations for things to do, see and eat beyond the obvious stuff like Bridal Veil Falls? Would especially love recs for vegetarian-friendly restaurants that won't break the bank (a great pizza place that has a meat-free pizza would qualify).

Toronto-Area Hotel for Family

We are stopping in Toronto during our Summer Road Trip Extravaganza (staying in TO July 24 and 25th). Our plans include a Jays game, the Ripleys Aquarium and the CN Tower. Getting a hotel in that that area seems very expensive. We are looking for hotel recommendations that are very subway/transit friendly to get to Downtown Toronto with a couple of not-tiny kids in tow (8 and 11). Or, if miracles exist, a hotel within walking distance of the area that is not a health/safety risk or terribly overpriced. Thanks!

Skating the Rideau Canal this weekend (and what to do if I can't)

I have plans to be in Ottawa this weekend so that I can skate the length of the Rideau Canal. So I was very dismayed to see that the entire canal is closed today. What are the chances that I'll be ice skating this weekend? What should I do if I can't? [more inside]

Ontario road trip - what should I see/do/eat? (especially in Toronto)

I’m going to do a solo drive from New York to Minneapolis next week and since I have a little free time, I’m thinking of taking a longer route through Canada. I’ll probably head straight up to Montréal and then across southern Ontario at least as far as Toronto. From there I’ll either continue to Windsor or possibly head up to Sudbury and across to Sault Ste. Marie. What should I see, do, and eat along the way? [more inside]

Accessible tourist spots in Toronto

My Dad and his wife are currently visiting and we can't think of anything to do on the weekend. His wife uses a walker and can't really navigate steps or walk for more than a block or two. They went to Niagara Falls today and are doing a half day city bus tour tomorrow, which I assume covers most of the touristy stuff downtown. Help me! [more inside]

What to do in Toronto in February? (w/Mom, Dad, MIL, 12th & 8th graders)

Our family (mom, dad, 8th & 12th grade boys, mother-in-law) will be in Toronto Feb 19-21. We've got museums generally covered, but we're looking for wacky and entertaining stuff to do in town and nearby, plus interesting food. We like humorous theater, used bookstores, record stores, game stores, D&D, comics, sci-fi, big wacky art exhibits, hikes, funky clothes shopping, ethnic foods & lots more random fun stuff. Please suggest anything out of the ordinary or weird or beloved for us to do or eat or experience!

Niagara Falls daytrip in December (& other TO attractions)

I'll be in Toronto from Dec 14-19, and I'm looking for things to fill an itinerary with. A friend suggested I might make a daytrip to Niagara Falls (I've never been). Is this feasible? Difficulty level: no car. [more inside]

(How) can we get to St Lawrence market Sunday during Toronto Marathon?

Decent hotel near the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario?

I have tickets to the Arcade Fire show in Windsor on November 1 and want to stay in Windsor rather than trying to battle the tunnel traffic back to Detroit after the concert. Any recommendations for one within walking distance? [more inside]

Medical insurance in Canada for a new immigrant

My husband and I were just approved for PR in Canada - yay! We're looking at moving to Toronto so will need medical cover for the first 3 months before we're eligible for OHIP. The visitor cover looks pretty basic and expensive for what it is. Would we be better off getting travel insurance from Australia for this period instead? Or is the hassle of dealing with an overseas insurer not worth it?

Canada Day fireworks - viewing spots in Ottawa this weekend

Ottawa is going to be crazy busy this weekend. We are going to be in town, and want to see the fireworks Saturday night. Give me your suggestions for good, lesser know/somewhat less crowded vantage points - ideally those we can drive to. I know it's going to be nuts - missing the fireworks is not an option for our group. Hope me!
