The incredible reappearing bookmarks toolbar

Why won't the bookmarks toolbar in Firefox 2.0 remain hidden across multiple sessions?

I just upgraded to Firefox 2.0 on my wife's Vaio running XP. She doesn't use bookmarks and so I'd like to hide the bookmarks toolbar, but after I hide it (View > Toolbars) and close Firefox, upon reopening the toolbar is back in all its empty glory.

I've seen the various other questions on related toolbar issues, I've reset localstore.rdf in the profile folder, and I've reinstalled the Google toolbar (the only add-on), all to no avail.

This is an incredibly insignificant problem, but it's bugging the hell out of me. Please help.

Maybe a firefox.exe zombie running in the background?

Response by poster: Nope. I checked for that, too.

Try a fresh profile. My guess is that an extension is causing some wackiness. If you can't replicate the problem on a new profile, you're in business. Just import the bookmarks over to the new profile, and reinstall the extensions from the web.

Response by poster: There are no extensions installed, though, and I already tried a new profile.

Best answer: Uninstall/reinstall? (make sure that you remove all profiles as well when you do this)

Best answer: It doesn't help that much, but I tried unchecking mine, and when I restart it still isn't displayed. So it can be done. And that's with every extension imaginable...

As chrisamiller says, a completely fresh install (including deleting the Firefox folder from Documents and Settings?

Does it still do this with the Google toolbar uninstalled completely, as opposed to freshly reinstalled?

Response by poster: Flabdablet: yeah, I tried it both without Google and with a new installation.

chrisamiller and Boobus Tuber: lacking other options, it seems that's my best bet. I'll give it a shot tonight.

Thanks for the help, guys.
