Looking for a song..

Looking for a hipster song (with hardly anything to go by..)

Hi, I'm looking for a song I heard belted out in a hipster bar, technically in Warsaw, but in a very hipster crowd. I don't have anything to really go on so this would be a miracle to find it...

The song was in English, everyone was singing it together on the dancefloor and with their heavy accent it kinda made the words sound Swedish-like. (This may have been just the accent though). I heard this song last month and am trying to remember a single useful word or phrase from it since. I only have a flashback or two to everyone shouting "you" at one point...

For some reason I remember that the words were a bit, as the British would say, "twee" but that there were several nice turns of phrase/play on words that were curious and surprising. (Was is something about a romance? Something about a couple, perhaps?)

The song was upbeat enough to be danced to, but the words were the main focal point, not as much the rhythm. People were kinda laughing and yelling to each other the words.
Definitely not a techno nor an electronic music/rock/r'n'b/ feel...
(This is impossible to find, right?) :(

I was going to say "Fireflies".. but your proclaimation of it neither being electronic in nature, or rock, or r&b leaves me confused.. was this a lounge tune or something?

Response by poster: (unfortunately it wasn't fireflies.. I really think the words were about a couple or a romance.)

The song wasn't heavy on an electronic beat nor was it rock guitar or with an r&b honey voice... it was more or a sweet, happy tune with people jumping around happy on the dancefloor. (yes, I realise this may mean a whole lot of different things)

Far-out guess: possibly "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People? It's burning up several radio stations in my market at present, it's kinda slurred/hipstery and people REALLY seem to like it.

Possibly You! Me! Dancing! by Los Campesinos?

I almost want to say it was "Home" by Edward Sharpe and the magnetic Zeroes?

Response by poster: Just listened to Pumped up Kicks.. but no cigar, m'afraid.
The song I remember didn't have a synthesized voice or a rock sounding chorus.. The words were well enunciated and just barely sung (nearly spoken.)

It's not "Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn & John is it?

one person singing? more than one? male? female? do you get the sense that it was a non-english singer singing in english (like lena)? could you tell if it was american or european?

Shot in the dark, but could it be, "Five Years Time" by Noah and the Whale?
posted by ThaBombShelterSmith at 5:23 PM on July 18, 2011

This is a super long shot, but could it possibly have been No Children by the Mountain Goats? It's not recent, but it's kinda hipster, seems to fit your other descriptors of the song, and tends to inspire sing-alongs (direct mp3 link).

Response by poster: Between You!Me!Dancing! and "Home" - I'd say it sounds much closer to the general tone/happy sounds of "Home".. however that's still not the song I remember..
posted by ruelle at 5:24 PM on July 18, 2011

Response by poster: It's not "No Children" nor "Five Years Time". Both of those have too much guitar (I feel like saying too much music in the backdrop.. pretty crazy explanation, I know..)

What about "When I'm With You" by Best Coast?
posted by goHermGO at 5:38 PM on July 18, 2011 [1 favorite]

Response by poster: nadawi - it was have been two people singing it, bit I heard it as an entire dance-floor belting the words out to each other, so I can't really even say of the original was in European English, British English or American, I'm afraid..
However, the lyrics gave off a happy vibe, happy-relationship vibe. And I remember thinking that the lyrics were simple enough words but decently constructed..
I'm pretty sure it was about a couple or a romance..

I think anything here is gonna be a random guess, but what the hell...how about the new Peter, Bjorn and John song Dig a Little Deeper?

maybe something by Fleet Foxes or Mumford & Sons? Both have that pastoral folk hipster vibe, and both massively popular?

I really hope this thread stays alive long enough for enough people to randomly call out a song name and for it to be correct. This is like an infinite monkeys scenario here..

"Charlie Parker" by I'm From Barcelona has that vibe with some catchy turns of phrase. Otherwise Jens Lekman maybe?

Response by poster: The Best Coast song is too California-ish, and it definitely isn't Satellite by Lena..

Response by poster: It has to be well known enough to have a dance-floor of hipsters singing.. I hope this isn't an infinite monkey scenario (because askmefi has worked miracles before!)

Beirut??

Response by poster: This Peter, Bjorn and John does have the right vibe, but neither the voices nor words don't strike me as the right ones.. (neither young love or charlie parker...)

Can you call the club and ask them. The staff will probably have a better idea of what you are talking about.
posted by Yorrick at 5:57 PM on July 18, 2011

Response by poster: Beirut - the minor chords strike me as wrong, and the lyrics I remember were clear and well-enunciated enough for foreigners to yell them and still make perfect sense..
(love the video-clip, though!)

Hipster bars will often play older songs for irony/because everyone knows them, so maybe it was an ABBA song?

Response by poster: Yorrick - actually I did contact the club! And they said they don't know/care.. it was on someone's compilation.
(Ok folks, It's 3am here -I'll check this is the morning)

Definitely not ABBA - at least not one of the BestOf that everyone knows! (oh dear, I'm starting to see the million monkey scenario..)

Could it be a song by Belle & Sebastian? Not sure of a particular one enough to link, but they have many songs that are twee and beloved by hipsters.

That always gets people singing along and dancing.

My wife suggests perhaps Phoenix - Long Distance Call
posted by setanor at 1:33 AM on July 19, 2011

Maybe too "rock-y", but when I think of hipsters singing along together I can't help but think of "Flagpole Sitta." Upbeat, major key, simple words but a few pretty cute turns of phrase, well-enunciated and sometimes a bit speak/sing-y, and the linked video was absolutely huge for a while a few years back. (I did have to search around a bit to find a site where it had not been taken down, I assume for copyright.) Not about a romance, though.
Also, I think Lovecraft In Brooklyn may have a good point about older songs. Which of course only makes this shot in the dark, uh, darker. Good luck.

Golden Silvers - True Romance?

I was going to come in with the Black Kids song but threeants beat me to it so how about 'You and me song' by the Wannadies? It's not really hipster now but could be in a retro-ironic fashion, and the chorus would get the crowd bopping.

I still really think people yelling "You!" means it was "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond, and I'm dying to know.

But also maybe "I want you to want me" by Cheap Trick?

Response by poster: Felicity Rilke (nice handle btw!) - the second one is way too rock-y, the first one is also too rock-guitar-ish, I'm afraid.
posted by ruelle at 9:47 AM on July 21, 2011

Response by poster: Sweet Caroline - too slow moving, and simply "old-fashioned" sounding.. sorry..
posted by ruelle at 9:48 AM on July 21, 2011

Response by poster: Two Door Cinema Club - "Undercover Martyn." - once again, too rock-guitar and the lyrics are too quickly sung here..

Response by poster: Same thing for Huddle Formation by the Go Team, and the Broken Social Scene.
But the xx and the postal service is vaguely reminding me of the general style..

Response by poster: GUYS, I think we have a NEAR winner...!!

Redsparkler's suggestion - Slow Club "me and you" is so damn close to what I remember this just may be it. The beginning didn't ring a bell, but starting at 0:40, that rythmic clapping, that definitely juggles the memory. It's also got that "shouting on the dancefloor" quality that strongly reminds me of the Warsaw club experience, esp. at 2:29. I need to re-listen to this several times to make sure, but this is really really close to what I remember..

Response by poster: You know what, I'm re-listening to this song, and I think it's really it. I'm floored. Seriously.

RedSparkler - you get 50 points!!!

Infinite monkeys have NOTHING on ask.mefi.

Thank you to everyone!!!
