An Over It Playlist
July 2, 2010 11:24 PM   Subscribe

Inspired by this thread, please help me make a playlist of good kiss off/I've moved on songs. Tom Petty's Don't Come Around Here No More, mentioned in the thread, sums up the sentiment I'm looking for perfectly. Not ragey You Oughta Know bitterness, more resigned/done/leave me alone. Any thoughts on songs with similar themes? Open to most genres (though not metal/anything super hard).

Ani DiFranco - Untouchable Face

So fuck you, and your untouchable face
Fuck you, for existing in the first place
Who am I, that I should be vying for your touch?
Said who am I, bet you can't even tell me that much

Sounds very Fuck You, but is much more It's Over And I Get It, Kinda Miffed About it, But Moving on.

Ohm and Cher - Strong Enough

'Cause I'm strong enough
to live without you
strong enough
I've quit crying long enough
Now I'm strong enough to know
You gotta go

Leona Lewis - Better in Time

Going coming
Thought I heard a knock
Who's there no one
Thinking that I deserve it
Now I realize that I really didn't know
If you didn't notice you mean everything
Quickly I'm learning to love again
All that I know is I'mma be ok

Thought I couldn't live without you
It's gonna hurt when it heals too
It'll all get better in time
Even though I really love you
I'm gonna smile cause I deserve to
It'll all get better in time

Bye Bye Baby / Mary Wells
I Know You Love Me Not / Julie Driscoll
I'd Much Rather Be With The Girls / Donna Lynn
Walking In Different Circles / Goldie and the Gingerbreads

"Blues Run the Game," Jackson Frank (or Counting Crows). "So. Central Rain," REM. "Heaven Knows," Robert Plant. "Joey," Concrete Blonde. "Putting the Damage On," Tori Amos.

Uh, wow. I guess I like my music resigned.

Don't Think Twice It's All Right - A Dylan song that's been covered by pretty much everybody (Cash, Elvis, Waylon Jennings, Nick Drake, Metric, Bobby Darin, and of course Joan Baez). Pick your favorite. Hell, you could make an entire mix of covers of this song. I'm partial to the Peter, Paul, and Mary version.

Red Rubber Ball (written by Paul Simon, recorded by The Cyrkle):
I should have known you'd bid me farewell

Now I know you're not the only starfish in the sea

"There's A Fine Fine Line" from the musical AVENUE Q

If someone doesn't love you back, it isn't such a crime
But there's a fine fine line between love and a waste of your time
And I don't have the time to waste on you anymore
I don't think you even know what you're looking for
For my own sanity I've got to close the door
And walk away, away

What do we call it now?
It isn't marriage anymore
Call it new and different
it ain't the way it was before

Of all the words to choose from
there's only one that fits
Call it what you want to
I call it quits

"100 Games of Solitaire" by Concrete Blonde:

I got a bag all packed, got a ticket for the train
Mexico to New Orleans and back again
I got a bottle of Tequila baby, who needs friends
I got a bottle of Tequila baby, who needs friends
I got a hundred miles of desert
Got a head of fresh air
And I know 100 games of solitaire
I got nothing to lose and I got nothing to do
I can go anywhere with anyone I choose
I got a dog named Lucky and 100 dollars in my shoes
Here I am on my way from here to there
And I know 100 games of solitaire
Well I don't know where I'll end up tonight
Any place with a bar and a bathtub's all right
I got a burnin' yearnin' for some new sounds and smells and sights
And if I never see your face again, well I don't care
'Cause I know 100 games of solitaire

Darn it, now this is how I should have framed my question! Rock Steady is right, though, guys are dense about that sort of thing, so I'll probably take his advice and use the direct approach, while playing a few of the songs in this thread for sheer enjoyment.

May I recommend The Smiths - What Difference Does It Make.

This might go too far on your ragey/bitterness scale, but just in case: Bif Naked's I Love Myself Today. Refrain:

I love myself today
Not like yesterday
I'm cool, I'm calm
I'm gonna be okay! Uh huh
I love myself today
Not like yesterday
Take another look at me now
'Cause it's your last look
Your last look forever

Beach House's Walk in the Park:

You go for a walk in the park 'cause you don't need anything
Your hand that you sometimes hold doesn't do anything
The face that you see in the door isn't standing there anymore

In a matter of time, it would slip from my mind
In and out of my life, you would slip from my mind
In a matter of time

The face that you saw in the door isn't looking at you anymore
The name that you call in its place isn't waiting for your embrace
The word that you learned to behold cannot hold you anymore

In a matter of time it, would slip from my mind
In and out of my life, you would slip from my mind
In a matter of time

Suzanne Vega - Marlene on the Wall
Tom Waits - Better Off Without a Wife

Shawn Colvin's album A Few Small Repairs has several songs that fit the bill, especially Get Out of This House and Nothin on Me, featuring these lyrics, which got me through a tough separation:

So don't you try to save me with your advice
Or turn me into somebody else
Cause I'm not crazy and you're not nice
Baby keep it to yourself
I'm not gonna cry
And I'm waving goodbye
And I know this time
You got nothin on me

What a great question! I actually pretty recently made a breakup mix for a friend. Many of the songs have already been mentioned, but here are a few more:

Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac verges on the angry, but it may be the best "over it" pop song ever.
Walk on By, originally by Dionne Warwick, covered by everyone
So Here We Are by Bloc Party (vague lyrics, but I always interpreted it as a "resigned post breakup" song)
Pyrite Pedestal by Pretty Girls Make Graves
Maybe You Keep Me Hangin' On by The Supremes

As Cool As I Am, by Dar Williams:
...You tried to make me doubt, to make me guess, tried to make me feel like a little less,
Oh, I liked you when your soul was bared, I thought you knew how to be scared,
And now it's amazing what you did to make me stay,
But truth is just like time, it catches up and it just keeps going.

And so I'm leaving, you can find out how much better things can get,
And if it helps, I'd say I feel a little worse than I did when we met...
