Birthday gift help: Keyboard and music writing software
My soon-to-be 14 year old son has been taking piano lessons for the last couple years. We are upgrading from a very old borrowed keyboard. I would like to get him a decent keyboard and he has been interested in some type of music writing software. As for budget - I'm imagining about 500 bucks or so? I just don't know where to start - I never even played the recorder.

More music like this, please
I like the theme from the BBC series, Shakespeare and Hathaway. It's custom-written and I'd like to hear more "real" - i.e., non-theme - music of a similar style. Please suggest to me specific pieces of music, composers, or search terms.
TV and movie soundtracks for discovering new music
I'm always looking for new/unfamiliar music to listen to and have found that soundtracks often introduce me to good music and genres that I might not seek out myself. What other TV and movie soundtracks should I listen to for music discovery?? [more inside]
Why music credits in movies, but not TV shows?
This AskMe reminded me of a long held question, most likely related:
Why is it that when you watch a movie’s credits, you see information for every song used in the movie—songwriter, performer, publisher—but when you watch a TV show’s credits, they don’t even list the names of the songs?
Music copyright and TV licensing
There are a number of television shows that have famously had trouble seeing a DVD release or syndication due to music licensing issues: Wonder Years, WKRP in Cincinnati, etc. Is there a reason this appears to impact television, but not movies? Ferris Bueller contains a Beatles song in its entirety, but can be seen on cable tv all the time. Goodfellas contains clips from dozens of songs, etc.
Books that will make me feel the way Lana Del Rey songs do
I love particularly love her Chemtrails over the Country Club, Summertime Sadness, and Young and Beautiful. I don’t I know I guess they make me feel nostalgic for things I haven’t experienced. And also as though I’m falling in love. Sorry I’m not very articulate right now but it’s difficult to put into words how her songs make me feel. I guess I’m looking for novels that are timeless, breezy but deep, about love, and stepped in nostalgia for the past (real or imaginary).
How do I find new music I like?
I am in my mid 30s and coming to terms with being An Old, but it would still be nice to find new artists to listen to. Is there a way to do this that will find me stuff I like that's more curated than streaming services? [more inside]

What is the sound at the start & end of Fakin' It by Simon & Garfunkel?
What is the sound at the start & end of the song Fakin' It by Simon & Garfunkel on the album Bookends? There are what sound like marching band drums overlaid by a bagpipe sort of sound, but I haven’t been able to locate a better description or explanation than that.
Can you recommend an ear-training app for a choral singer?
I have a chorus audition coming up. Part of the audition will be hearing a few notes and then singing them back. Are there any good apps for practicing that?
(There’s a strong likelihood that these will be canceled because of the dang pandemic, but let's not get into the covid of it all, please.)
Looking for specific Soviet Folk Funk video
In this music video there's a funk band playing in the outdoors, 1970s. Later in the video some young, attractive female folk dancers in uniform/costume (shorts & boots I think) come out and dance in a circle around the band, or near the band. Flute, guitar, organ, drums. Unsure of key exactly, but IIRC the tune starts out something like: E5-D5D5,B4D5-E5 / B4-A4A4,E4A4 / Bb4, Bb4 A4-G4,E4-D4E4. Thanks for any tips! Last saw it on Youtube maybe 12+ years ago.
Looking for a song about trees
Several weeks ago I heard a country / folk-ish song about trees on KDHX. I believe the singer was a man. The gist of the song was that the singer was describing a variety and number of trees growing in a place (on a hill, maybe?). Unfortunately I can't remember any of the specific numbers or trees, and it's proving very difficult to search for. From the style and production quality I would guess the song was recorded relatively recently. [more inside]

Find me the right online synthesizer/MIDI for my needs
I have (literally) one bar of sheet music. I need to enter it into some kind of synthesizer, manipulate it to get the sound I want and then export it for use in a video. I have no experience with online music-making tools. [more inside]
AI Music Software
I have an old demo recording of a song I wrote way back. I've had it professionally digitized and remastered. The vocals are nice and clear, but the synthesizer instrumentals were weak to begin with and have degraded further since.
What would be the best software to use to isolate the vocals and recreate the instrumentals? It would need to be automated as I don't know much about music. (I wrote the lyrics and sent them with detailed instructions for what kind of sound I wanted to a demo recording service. They actually did a really good job; everyone who's heard it has seemed quite impressed.) The other option, and probably the better one, would be to pay a professional to do it. [more inside]
Escape from Apple Music
My music collection is in Apple Music and it was a huge mistake. It includes mp3s I joined the service with that "matched," mp3s that didn't match, mp3s that matched wrong (ugh), and also stuff I added to my library since signing up. Well, a bunch of my collection has disappeared over the years, I'm fed up, and I want out. How do I escape with the rest of my collection intact? I will throw money at this problem if I have to.

More songs like "Alone in Kyoto"
I love "Alone in Kyoto" by Air. What really draws me in is how it's minimalist and steady but then has the small embellishments. I like working to music like that. What are some similar songs?
Is there a good podcast about vocal interpretation?
I love the podcast "Strong Songs" and in his episode about "I Will Always Love You" he spends more time than usual talking about Whitney Houston's singing in her version of the song. I'm so interested in this topic and I would love to hear someone with expert knowledge break down performances by amazing vocalists.
The "Aria Code" podcast does this a little bit, but I'd like WAY more detail, and not just opera.
It doesn't HAVE to be a podcast but I'd prefer that to a video. [more inside]

Playlist: Songs for When It's Okayish
The Germans probably have a word for this. It's a sunny Friday afternoon and I have a few hours of work left. Things are fine and things are sad. There's fun plans in the near future but the awful times of the near past still feel very vivid. Everyone I love is "fine" and nobody I love is fine. The world is coming back but I miss everyone and everything all the time, anyway. What songs should I listen to for the rest of the day?
Automated way of quick and dirty mixing some speech audio
I have spoken word audio and background tracks which I have license to. Some music and some are like beach noise. I want to mix the spoken word and the background tracks. I have an older Mac and audacity but I would happily pay for an automated service that could do quick and dirty versions of mixing these. I don’t have budget for a producer or studio. Suggestions? Thank you!
Modern approach to music theory
Is there a curriculum that teaches music theory starting with something like serialism or the 12 tone scale, then goes back to classical Western music as a special case? I want to learn assuming that dividing an octave into 12 frequencies is the basis of Western music and then treats things like scales and keys as special cases. [more inside]
Slideshow + audio under 50mb. possible?

best 90s distorted guitar feedback sounds

Trying to recall an EDM song that came out ~8-10 years ago
I'm trying to recall an EDM track that was released maybe 8-10 years ago. It wasn't that obscure - I think it was by a fairly well-known producer. The music video featured a lot of wide open rural/wilderness-y landscapes, interspersed with scenes of solitary humans. (possible tw in "more inside" - suicide scene) [more inside]
The many lives of Pete Davidson
So, up until yesterday I was 100% convinced that Pete Davidson from SNL used to be in a mid-2000s pop-punk / emo band. But I looked him up yesterday and found out that's definitely not true -- and the timeline doesn't even work out, since he was only a preteen in the 2000s. So, who do I have him confused with? Spotify playlists for new releases?
With live shows on the horizon, I want to hear new music from bands who might be touring soon.
I know its bad and wrong, but I like Spotify playlists. In addition to Spotify's Release Radar, I follow KEXP's Song of the Day 2021 and Pitchfork's Best New Music.
Any recommendations for other playlists focused on new releases only? I like indie rock, but also rap, jazz, twangy stuff, etc.
Thanks for any recs!

Movie dialog - every line an Elvis song
I was reminded today of a film, released somewhere between 1985 and 2005, which contained an entire scene of somewhat flirtatious dialog composed entirely of song titles. I seem to recall that they were Elvis songs, and it feels like it was some mediocre director who had a few box office smashes.
It feels like a typical conceit, but I couldn't find other examples on a quick search. What do you think MeFites? You know what movie this was, or other films using this trope?

Where is my drummy poppy music?
When I was exercising today Paul Simon's Obvious Child came on and WOWEE those drummers got me fired up. Give me more like this! Those happen to be Brazilian drummers, but I'm looking for any super heavy drumming similar to that, even American marching band drum line style, but I do want it similar to this in terms of drums + poppy music. Suggest music for me to sweat to, please!
Who were this amps-on-11 NOT-showy NO-horns 90s Balkan band?
I checked an album out from the Ann Arbor District Library in the 90s that has been haunting me ever since. It was a three- or four-piece band: clarinet, electric bass, and if I remember right electric guitar and/or American drum kit. They played very fast, very loud instrumental Balkan tunes, with no Gogol Bordello/wedding-band-type showmanship. No horn section, no accordion, no vocals, no hand drums, no hip-hop or EDM production, no sampling, no toasting or shouting between verses, seriously just a small electric band playing tunes with their amps all the way up. Wild and Wild Song?
I heard a song at the grocery store today with the line of "wild and wild" in it, I think. I could be mishearing the lyrics. I'm willing to bet it's performed by a well-known female artist. Probably fairly popular, current, and mainstream. At this "wild and wild" point in the song it feels like it's building up a little bit. Any ideas what this song is?
