Please help me find a fantasy holiday-ish getaway that would be fun for a kid and his grown-ups. I'd like to take my 8 YO and my husband to Vermont for a 3-4 nights between Christmas and New Year's. Hoping to find a magical lodging place with at least some of the following qualities: charming; woodsy; grounds where my kid can play in the snow; on-site or nearby snowshoeing and/or sledding; some on-site dining options and/or cabins/cottages with a kitchen. A friend of mine is going to be in Barre, VT, on Monday for the eclipse, but he has to attend a virtual meeting (the final thesis defense of a student!) from 10-11:30am. He is hoping to find a corner of a non-profit or other space not too far from the historic district of Barre in exchange for donating to the organization. Next weekend, I'm visiting Vermont for the first time ever. I'll be flying into Manchester, NH, on Thursday, renting a car, and driving around solo for four days. My itinerary is open ended -- I just want to get a feel for the state, hopefully catch the leaves before they go brown, visit some small towns, and stuff myself with tasty food. The rough plan right now is to drive up to Montpelier and use that as a base to explore. Vermonters and those who know the lay of the land, do you have any tips for me?
