I remember several years ago (possibly a decade or more) reading a long-form article about a guy who stayed for a year in luxury hotels at very low prices by offering to stay for long periods. Can you find the article, and does this strategy still work? [more inside]
OK, so I own a 2012 Scion XB which I bought new in 2013. Since then, I've put a grand total of 17,000 miles on it. I live in the city. I bike to work. I'm basically that grandmother who drives to the supermarket once a week. I change the oil every six months, and I've replaced the front tires once because the tread was low. Rear tires are doing fine. Given my light usage, what kind of maintenance should I be looking out for? Brake pads? Belts? Spark plugs? What am i missing? [more inside]
So about 20 years ago a friend and I went walking south from Houston and Hudson Streets in NYC and somewhere a block or two from the Hudson River, maybe down near where the WTC used to be or Century 21 still is (?), we came across a row of about three very old houses. And now I can't find them and it's making me nuts. [more inside]
I'm 45 years old but have thankfully avoided car accidents my entire life. Until I got a car I love... Then, 3 months after buying it, I got broadsided. I'm trying to navigate this and get my car back to pre-broadside condition (including the CarFax). Details inside, but help needed from anyone who's been through this, or especially insurance agents and car dealers. [more inside]
I'll be staying with a friend in Shoreline, WA next week and I'm looking for safe morning running routes. [more inside]
I'm traveling to NYC. I need to get from JFK to Penn Station in less than two hours. My time window is between 1:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Is that doable, and if yes, what's the best way to do it?
Question from an American learning to drive in England about the right way to go over bumps in the road that you can straddle. [more inside]
My partner and I (M-F couple in our early 40s, no kids) are thinking about a short trip to London. Our chief interest is visiting craft cocktail bars. What parts of town should we considering staying in? Thanks!
I will have to be in Stockholm for nine days in October, without credit cards or a mobile phone. How difficult is it going to be to get around/pay for things? [more inside]
We recently bought a 2013 Volkswagen from a Toyota dealership for $7500. We paid cash and signed an As-Is document. After driving the car for a week, the Check Engine light came on. We took the vehicle to the Volkswagen dealership across the street from the Toyota dealership, and they said there are $5800 worth of repairs needed on the car, primarily all in the engine. They also said that the repairs are extensive enough that the selling dealership had to have known about them when they sold it. [more inside]
Not carryon -- I'm glad to check it. But the stupid thing (present from an ex, too expensive to throw away, I've found a home for it) doesn't fit in my luggage (it's about a yard long and 8" across the hilt) and I don't want to buy a giant new bag for it. I was thinking I could find a giant poster tube, but searching isn't giving me anything in the right dimensions. Anyone have either a source for a 9"x38 poster tube, or a better idea?
What should I do to maximize a mid-October visit to Space Center Houston? We will be staying at a nearby hotel and using uber. I have tickets for the Level 9 VIP Tour, which includes Space Center Admission for the next day. We are interested in seeing any iconic displays, Saturn V, mission control, space shuttle, Gemini/Apollo capsules, etc, and have no interest in gimmicky ones like Galaxy Lights. The more detailed and adult-oriented space, science, and engineering content the better. [more inside]
I find myself unexpectedly about to go to Barcelona for a week. There's work I need to do while I'm there. Are there interesting places where I can comfortably and unobtrusively sit with a laptop for a few hours? [more inside]
Where can I store a small overnight bag near the SLC airport for ~9 hours? [more inside]
I was in Florence this week and my bag was stolen - it only contained a sketchbook and something with my school program name. Someone messaged the school saying they found it and wanted to know if the group was still in Florence so it could be returned or picked up at a specific police station. I am in Rome now. Mr. DrGail and I are headed from our home in Chicago to St. Louis for the Historic Shaw Art Festival in early October. Besides spending a few days in and around the city, we're casting about for other places to go and things to do on our fall road trip. [more inside]
I just bought a used car. According to the maintenance schedule, the timing belt should have been replaced by a previous owner, but I don't know if it actually was. Should I get it replaced just to be safe? [more inside]
I can't find my wallet. I'm scheduled to fly domestically within the US tomorrow. I've read some online about providing alternative documentation for TSA and wanted to hear some firsthand experiences and advice from other MeFites! [more inside]
Please don't take offense to this but I've received a wonderful job offer in LA and completely and utterly hate the city after 2 weeks. I lived in a lot of places and even places I didn't particularly like, I didn't seem to hate it. A lot of people live here and love it, so I'm missing something. Details within. [more inside]
Assume I know about Amsterdam's hash culture yadda yadda yadda already. If I only get this one chance to visit Belgium and Amsterdam - I want to hear what you absolutely love about it if you live there or have extensive travel stories. And OF COURSE I want your best beer and frites rec's, please and thank you. [more inside]
