Moving from Minecraft on Windows to Minecraft on Mac?

My 8-year-old is a huge mincraft fan. They play on a Windows PC, which is starting to fall apart. We want to get them a new computer, and are thinking of a Mac (which is what his mom and I mostly use). Can we easily do that? My understanding is the editions are different. Are there downsides? Can my kid keep all the stuff they've built? Anything else I should know?

Do they play on the Windows Minecraft edition or the Classic (Java) edition? Both are available for Windows. If it's the latter, they can save and transfer everything. I don't know if that's the case for the Windows version.
