Minecraft, Java, & Forge Troubles (Mac OS X)

Young Cocoa (9yo) has asked me to install the More Nature mod for Minecraft and I have run into a loop of Kafkaesquian loopiness.
- I’m running Minecraft 1.8, Launcher 1.0, on OSX 10.9.4
- I discover that to install the More Nature mod I should install Forge.
- After downloading Forge it tells me I have to run 1.7.10 “at least once manually.” Though the message comes with a Java logo, I eventually discover it means Minecraft 1.7.10.
- Ok, I’ll downgrade to Minecraft 1.7.10 and I download that
- I get a message saying “The java .jar file cannot be launched. Check Console for possible errors.”
- I check Console but can’t parse what it’s telling me or what’s even related to the Java/.jar issue, but nothing says Java, .jar, etc.
- I check versions and completeness of installation of Java. All looks good. It’s Oracle Java Standard Edition 1.8.0_25
- I restart the machine just to solidify the Forge & Java installations, and try it all again. No joy.
- I go ahead and download Java for Apple OS X Java 6 since some forums say that can make a difference. No joy.
I consider myself tech friendly in that I’m not afraid to read support forums critically and triangulate on possible solutions, but I’ve reached the edge of my world of troubleshooting.
O hivemind, can you show me the way out of this so that I, too, can have More Nature?

Also, have you looked into using magic launcher with Forge?

Response by poster: Thanks natteringnabob, method #1 in your link worked (downgraded to 1.7.10 via profile) and I've gotten Forge and the More Nature mod installed (according to the main screen after MC is launched: "4 mods installed, 4 mods active")!
BUT now it crashes every time it starts play.

Have you tried changing the graphics settings for better performance? More nature looks like it might create a lot more processor activity with all the new mobs.
Good luck.
