Why do multiple gmail accounts work this way?

So on my work computer, I use both my email and a shared email. When I log into the shared email with the shared email credentials, it opens my personal email rather than the shared email. I can only open the shared email in an incognito window. The emails are not linked and I can't toggle into the other email from my email.

Similarly, on my phone I will log into my work email -from the work email log in page with my work email dual log-in! - and it will open my default phone email.

Basically, on both my work PC and my android phone, it has imprinted on one gmail account and always opens that one no matter what log-in method and password I use unless I switch to an incognito window. If it were just the phone, I would assume it was some stupid phone default email situation linked to the device, but the PC is just relatively random PC.

Why does it do this? This seems insecure and bad. How can I make it stop?

If you are using the Google Chrome browser, your Chrome profile is linked to your Google Account. You can create multiple Chrome profiles if you want to be logged into different Google accounts in different browser windows. (Or you can use a different web browser, like Firefox.)

Additional note: Chrome for Android phones doesn‘t support multiple profiles. Instead you can use a different browser, or you can sign into an additional Google account on your phone and then use the Gmail app to access your mail.

Or, on both desktop and phone, after logging into Gmail in browser, tap on your account name/icon and choose "Sign into another account..." or "Add another account..." which should then give you the ability to toggle between the accounts.

You can log in to multiple Google Accounts at the same time. You don't need to have multiple profiles if you don't want to. You just need to select the account in the top right of Gmail and it will open the other Gmail account in a new tab (I'm logged into four accounts right now).

Should be the same on your phone, unless you're using the Gmail app, in which case you need to set up both accounts on your phone.

I usually have several Chrome windows open on my laptop, one for my work and one for my personals. When I open Chrome, it shows the different accounts I can log into and I pick from there. If I want to open another one, I click on my profile pic in the top right and select another profile from the list, which opens in a new window.

On my android phone, I use the Gmail app and can toggle between mailboxes also by clicking my profile pic. If I go to the menu bar on the left and select All Inboxes, it will show me all mail from every account. If I just select Inbox, it only shows mail for the address I'm currently in.

For Chrome on my phone, I can toggle profiles through the Settings menu on the top right.
