Looking For Songs That Have A Dark, Driving Beat
November 20, 2013 2:54 PM   Subscribe

Working on a project and I'm looking for songs that have a dark, driving, ominous beat. Like a thunderstorm looming on the horizon if I could give it a visual.

I'm not looking for extremely mainstream music - (please no Madonna, etc)

Also, the newer the better, but I will take all suggestions. Instrumentals are good as well as lyrical.

Some examples:

The Black Angels - Prodigal Sun ( http://youtu.be/-Q1l4Sz4Hhg )

SOHN - Lessons - (http://youtu.be/e17iXDf0NGE - especially at 2:11 when the volume is increased, great example of the type of song I want although the vocals on this song are a little too "light" and not quite what I need)

Junior Boys - In The Morning, Parallel Lines

Dave Gahan - Kingdom

I love music like this, so I've got a bunch. But I'm at work so I can't give as much as I'd like — I'll drop in and out with some suggestions.

First off, Indian Jewelry. This is their track Lesser Snake; almost all of their music has this feel.

Black Mountain, the Vancouver rock band, does a lot of this.

Comsat Angels did some of this; Independence Day is a favorite.

Swerker Corvus Corax. I love this song and also have the overwhelming feeling I need to find a place to hide rather than sit there enjoying the music.

Pink Floyd - One of These Days. (I'm not sure what's up with the linked video, but the music is there.)

Simple Sister by Procol Harum. Once it gets going it doesn't let up. And that long, crazy bridge... and then the strings and horns!

Bavarian Druglords, Goldsoul.
Teeth of the Sea, Black Strategy.
Gnod, Tron.
Terminals, Something Dark.
Woodsman, In Circles.
Public Service Broadcasting, Signal 30.

The entire album Ghost Tropic by Songs: Ohia has this ominous feel for me, although the beat is sparser than in your examples.

Maybe the best two for your purposes:
Not Just a Ghost's Heart
The Body Burned Away
