Indie wedding playlists ...

Can we do this again? Indie music for a wedding? We're iPodding it for our reception, and would love some new suggestions for music that we might have overlooked. I've looked at the older threads on this on MeFi, but the newest one is a couple of years old.

"Oh My Stars" by Andrew Belle is a great song! I think it would be beautiful for wedding listening/dancing. Congratulations!

"Alone", off Trampled by Turtle's brand-spanking new album, is simply beautiful.

"Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes ("Home is wherever I'm with you")

"Fidelity" by Regina Spektor is an obvious but perfect choice.

See what you think, these may or may not work for you:
• Isobell Campbell & Mark Lanegan—No Place to Fall
• Patrick Wolf—The City
• Moses Campbell—Saturday
• Joe Goddard—All I Know
• Michael Hurley—The Time Is Right
• Golden Birthday—Infinite Leagues
• Shimmering Stars—Let It Be Me [nice cover of the song the Everly Brothers made famous]
• Paul Baribeau—Strawberry
• The Black Lips—I'll Be With You

Not recent, but still great:
• Karen Dalton—I Love You More than Words Can Say
• The Raincoats—In Love
• I'm from Barcelona—Treehouse

Not technically indie or recent, but speaking as a former college radio dj, to me a good "indie" playlist has a lot of variety and surprise, so might you check them out to see if they add a bit of fun to your list:
• Rose Maddox—Hey Little Dreamboat [old school rockabilly]
• Frank Wilson—Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) [motown]
• Tom T. Hall—I Love [country]
• Barbara Lewis—Baby, I'm Your's [soul]
• Billy Stewart—I Do Love You [soul]
• Bobby Moore & The Rhythm Aces—Searching for my Love [soul]
• Jackie Wilson—I'll Be Satisfied [soul]
• Tracy Pendarvis—A Thousand Guitars [old school rockabilly]
• Kay Starr—Comes A-Long A-Love [swing]
• Jo Stafford—Make Love to Me [way old school vocal jazz]
• Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell—Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing [classic]
• Susan Christie—When Love Comes [psych-folk-pop]

I'll probably have more tomorrow.

Taken by Trees - Sweet Child O' Mine

Just an aside really, but when I picked music for our wedding reception last year, I ended up completely abandoning the idea that the music had to be romantic and/or meaningful, and just chose a hundred or so bits of music that (a) one or both of us enjoyed, and (b) would sound ok played as background music while a hundred people socialised and consumed food and drink. I found the simplest thing was to pick three or four of the most upbeat/catchy tracks by every artist we liked. I'm sure some of the songs were about heartbreak and divorce, but it mattered not at all, as the music was pretty much incidental to most of the people there.

When I saw the magnetic fields recently, when they played The Book of Love, Shirley asked who in the audience had played it at their wedding... At least half a dozen couples had : )

It's a cover of a Peter Gabriel song, and personally I like his version better.

Aw, The Book of Love was our first dance!

We also used Kanye West's Lost in the World, which was funny and irreverent (and scandalized the old folks, but I love Kanye).

We walked down the aisle to a violin rendition of Sufjan Stevens' The Predatory Wasp is Out to Get Us!

Other songs we asked the DJ to play:

TV on the Radio's Family Tree (also would make a great first dance song, though it's quite dark)
Cat Power's New York, New York because the wedding was in Brooklyn
Tallest Man on Earth's King of Spain and The Gardener
Ingrid Michaelson's Fools Rush In
Talking Heads' This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)

amro, Peter Gabriel covered Magnetic Field's Book of Love, not the other way around. At least according to wikipedia. Great song.

As someone who was recently married and also thought of skimming the past MeFi threads for indie music for a wedding, I'll throw out my two cents worth of advice. While lesser-known indie music is great for dinner and slow dancing, I'd strongly recommend pulling out some DJ classics for the dancing portion of your reception. My wife and I tried to have some fast-paced poppy indie songs, but unless all of the friends you'll be inviting are into that sort of music, it's hard for people to get into the mood to dance unless they're used to rocking out to a song--and yes, that means Usher, Black Eyed Peas, and all that other music you love to hate.

We walked down the aisle to "You Knocked Me Off My Feet" by Sondre Lerche.

Amro, I think the Peter Gabriel version is the cover. But it's great too.
