Indie wedding playlist help!

WeddingMusicFilter, help me make a iPod wedding playlist for our indie-loving friends.

I've asked for romantic indie music before. But additional suggestions for a multiple-hour playlist are requested from the Hive.

Try the Damnwells! Their latest record, Air Stereo, has some good romantic indie songs on it like I've Got You, Accidental Man, and Kung-Fu Grip Kiss.

1. Mew - Am I Wry? No.
It's super hip and indie and ends with an irresistable chorus: "Diamond Ring... Diamond Ring..."

2. Grizzly Bear - On a Neck, On a Spit
Indie/folkie fitting lyrics: "Each day spend it with you now..."

3. The Red House Painters - Song for a Blue Guitar
A slow, romantic, let's dance alone in bliss beautiful song with a slide guitar. If you're only gonna check out one of these suggetions, get this track.

4. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great
Maybe kind of cliche, but it's a great current pop/dance indie classic. so many adjectives....

That's just a few tracks to get you started off the top of my head. Check out some of the more obvious choices like Belle & Sebastian.

The song Question by the Old 97s is my favorite wedding song.

Morning Edition on NPR just had a story on a very similar topic. You should check out the list that Stephen Thompson came up with.

The National - Slow Show

I wanna hurry home to you
put on a slow, dumb show for you
and crack you up

Rilo Kiley - Portions for Foxes

And you're bad news
I don't care, I like you
I like you

The Decemberists are all about romantic songs. The Crane Wife, O Valencia, Yankee Bayonet, We Both Go Down Together, The Bagman's Gambit, From My Own True Love (Lost At Sea) ... problem is at least one of the lovers usually ends up dead, imprisoned, ran away, etc.

The Black Heart Procession - Even Thieves Couldn't Lie

"she pointed at the map and said
"any place looks good to me, just run with me"
she said "any place looks good to me,
as long as you run with me away from here""

but it has the same problem with someone ending up dead.

"Mystifies Me," Son Volt
"Fade Into You," Mazzy Star
"Ol' 55," Tom Waits
"You Are the Everything," R.E.M.

and one of my favorites (totally biased as this was my first dance!), "When It Comes to You," Buddy and Julie Miller:

you can send me out on a high wire
without a net below me
you can stick a feather in my hat
and call it matrimony
you got the time baby let's do the crime
we can dance while the wedding bells chime
i see my future coming into view
when it comes to you

Aha, I'm getting married soon and it's going to be the indiest wedding that registrar has ever heard. Here are my choices so far (having trouble narrowing them down):

Arctic Monkeys - Baby I'm Yours (cover of the 1960s Barbara Lewis song, done very respectfully)
The Wannadies - You And Me Song, or if you want to be a bit more obscure, Big Fan ("I'm a big fan of you...")
Easyworld - Til The Day
Arab Strap - There Is No Ending
Guillemots - Made Up Lovesong #43
Magnetic Fields - It's Only Time
For Now And Ever - Super Furry Animals (if they ever did a song more perfect for a wedding, I've not heard it)
posted by terrynutkins at 1:56 AM on July 3, 2007 [1 favorite]

Haha, that last one should be Super Furry Animals - For Now And Ever. Unless any bands called For Now And Ever have been found to sing a song about Welsh indie nutters.

I'm guessing this is some sort of background music playlist? It really depends on what sort of 'mood' your looking for:

Five for Fighting - 100 Years
Ed Harcourt - Apple of My Eye
Iron & Wine - Fever Dream
Ray Lamontagne - Forever my Friend / Hold you in my Arms
Kings of Convenience - I'd Rather Dance With You
Nick Drake - Northern Sky (Awesome Song)
Rob Dickinson - The Night (Probably a little somber)

A few, but there is a whole mountain of more mainstream ones that it would take forever to list!

Enjoy your indie wedding..

Flood of Sunshine - The Posies

Billy Bragg- Greetings to the new brunette
I don't think this is a pro-marriage song. I usually interpret "Politics and pregnancy/Are debated as we empty our glasses" and "you really know how to make a young man angry/can we get through the night without mentioning family" as him leaving his pregnant girlfriend instead of marrying her, and "greetings to the new brunette" refers to the baby. Also, "The Marriage" from the same album doesn't give the album a pro-marriage mood.

Even if I'm wrong, the song would only work if the bride's name is Shirley.
