Is there an iOS app that will let me choose a shade/hue/colour and then tell me the artsy-fartsy names for it, or those that are near fits? There are plenty of tools for finding hex values, but I want the pretty names like apple green, persimmon, feldgrau etc.

I don't know of an app like that but
You could bookmark the awesome results from the XKCD color survey.

I searched some more but all I found were some windows apps.

These two web lists are good too

Name that Color is a website that lets you pick colours and then it gives you their name (sometimes approximate) and RGB values.

Resene ColourMatch

Lets you sample a colour in a saved picture or via the camera.

Try Ben Color Capture... it's Benjamin Moore colors, but definitely meets your "artsy-fartsy name" requirement.

Response by poster: Thanks zephyr_words. 'Baby shit green'? Heh. I found this from your links which is nice:

Thanks Jasper Friendly Bear. That's a great tool.

AD_, Resene ColourMatch seems to be geographically restricted. It's not in the U.K. store. Pity, looks good.

Thanks aberrant. That app's quite good but a bit finicky. I find it hard to get my fingertip right where I want it to be.
