Help me type in Japanese! (Mac OS X)

I'm a motion graphics guy who is working on a project that requires a lot of Japanese characters to appear on the screen (mostly Katakana, but some Hiragana as well).

Although I'm not fluent in Japanese, I know how to read the Katakana/Hiragana characters (I just don't know what 50% of the words actually mean), as well as how to form Japanized renditions of non-Japanese words.

So I know what characters to type, the problem is I don't know how to actually (and easily) type them in to my Photoshop/Illustrator/After Effects comps! I've tried calling up the Character Palette, but I can't seem to get the character I see in the palette to actually appear when the Text tool of my respective application is activated. But even if I could get it to work that way, it seems awfully tedious to do it that way.

Is there a way I can just type the Romaji of the Japanese words, and have them converted into the corresponding Katakana? I need these characters to be scalable vector/type format, so if there's some kind of web app that does these sorts of conversions, it needs to output them as vectors, not simple bitmaps.

I'm on Mac OS X 10.4.9 running Photoshop/Illustrator/After Effects CS3.

Best answer: 1. Open System Preferences
2. Click on International
3. Click on the Input Menu tab
4. Enable the Kotoeri Input Method

A U.S. flag now appears on the top right of your screen. Click on it, and you can now select between US, Romaji, Hiragana, Katakana.

For Hiragana and katakana, just type the sound of the japanese character using your keyboard, and the correct japanese character will apear. You can even hit space after typing a japanese word, and it will attempt to guess the correct kanji.

The input menu is "per application" so you can have different input methods active for different apps (ie. english for safari, katakana for photoshop)
