Music like Fred Neil?

How do I find more musicians like Fred Neil?

I'd been listening to Fred Neil (Bleeker & MacDougal) play in a in a cafe before finally buying my own copy a week ago. I love it to death right now, and I'd like more stuff like this.

He reminds me of a cross between Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. I don't know much about this scene/genre. Who else can you recommend that fits into this category?

Music Map, Pandora, and a bunch of other sites you can find in similar questions.

Well, the Music Map suggestions are pretty silly (Liz Phair... and Looper?). If you dig that manly, brooding folk thing I'd suggest the first few Tim Hardin albums (they're conveniently numbered 1,2, 3 and 4 is a great live disc), Bobby Darin's late-sixties folk recordings, Tim Buckley (he also did a version of Neil's "Dolphins"), maybe some Townes Van Zandt.

LastFm is also good for finding similar music. You might like Lee Hazelwood, Donovan, Tom Waits, Nick Drake...

It’s good to hear that Fred Neil is still alive and well. Its been almost 40 years now and I would love to catch him at a small venue. It’s a longshot, and it won’t be easy, but you might want to check out Richard Farina.

He may be too "electric", but Ammunition by Tim Easton is one of the best discs I've picked up this year and it may fit into what you're looking for. I can't believe he's not getting more notoriety.

Response by poster: Oh Huplescat, sorry to get your hope up. I meant I listened to his CD playing in a cafe. Fred's been dead since 2001, unfortunately.

Unless you meant you are happy to hear that the spirit of his music is alive and well...in which case, yeah, it is.

Dave Van Ronk
Tim Buckley

Here's a nice quote that I just found on a Fred Neil google: from Dave Van Ronk: Van Ronk stated: "The beatniks hated folk music. The real beats liked cool jazz, bebop, and hard drugs... But in the eye of the media, folk music and beatniks were one and the same. So a lot of people came to the Village to see the beatniks and they ended up seeing folk music."

Oh yeah, what was the question. Sorry..
