How to find freelance editing work?

What's the best way to find freelance editing gigs? (Forget the websites like freelance.com, the rates offered are laughable.) I'm trying to find work online from reputable companies, any tips? I have experience and references, FWIW.

Can you mention any other methods of finding gigs you've tried or dismissed so far, to minimize unhelpful or unnecessary suggestions?

Information regarding your geographical location, compensation expectations, and your preferred variety of editing work might also help refine answers to your question.

I've never used them, but a coworker of mine has mentioned that she's picked up a few freelance gigs in the past from the job board at copyeditor.com.

Also, do you live near any college/university campuses? Maybe you could post some flyers offering to proofread theses/dissertations (and/or post on Craigslist). I've proofed a few PhD dissertations in the past; grad students are often more than delighted to have a new set of eyes take a look at the monster before they have to submit it.

Journalismjobs.com is the standard job-searching site for true journalists — you don't have to be a member, and they often have freelance gigs posted.
