Why's it called that?

What are the etymological origins of the drink called "Chapman"?

Help me wow my boss by explaining the origins of the name of this drink!

I'm at a conference in Fiji and was discussing difficult reference questions with my boss. She was once asked why a drink combining angostura bitters, lemon, and lime is called a Chapman in Fiji and never found out the answer. My google-fu shows a similar drink made in Nigeria but doesn't explain the origin of the name. Any ideas?

The most common story is that it was invented at the The European Club (now Ikoyi Club) in Lagos. If that is the case then the date of invention is before 1938, when The European Club and Lagos Golf Club merged.

As is often the way with these things, it appears to be lost whether it was invented by a demanding patron or an enterprising barman. Regardless of the inventor, it is more likely to have been named after the patron than the barman, given the era.

There are variants on this drink throughout Africa - rock shandy, a mixture of lemonade, soda and bitters is popular in southern Africa.
