Can anyone tell me the name of the font used in the opening credits of the Love Boat?
Possibly a free version?

Best answer: Not free, this is it. (Via Google image search for "stencil font".) There's probably a freeware knockoff somewhere in one of the umpteen-bazillion free font repositories on the Web.

The rips-offs are called Futuri which should be enough to google for it.

This looks nothing at all like all the other variants of Futura (for instance). How on earth did this typeface get this name?

That's an excellent question, xil, and one I've wondered about for a very long time. As an aside, it is a stunningly ugly typeface.

There even was an online service to find names of font after you upload the image. Anyone remembers?

The Futura family actually has a couple of off-the-wall variants. See this page at Linotype.
The find-a-font-from-an-image service is probably What The Font. There's also Identifont for identifying a font by answering a series of questions about how it looks.

Identifont was useless on this font. It gave the wrong answer after about 25 questions.
Although their page on Futura Black gives some historic details, like that it dates from 1929 and was first created as a font by Paul Renner.

Wow, you're right, Identifont really sucked at that. Although when I had the whole of Futura Black laid out in front of me and could answer esoteric questions about the shape of the dollar sign, it gave me the right answer in only 38(!) questions. I guess it just works better with larger samples.
