How to make a cookbook recipe index?

Is there any good (Mac) software for making a comprehensive cookbook index from recipe ingredients?

I've been making a cookbook as a holiday gift for the last 9 years, and for the 10th anniversary I want to combine each book into one hardcover book, probably through Blurb or Lulu .com.

Most of it is going to be pretty easy, but I want to put together a more comprehensive index that's more than just the recipe name, but would be sorted by ingredients, etc. None of the recipe software listed in other MeFi discussions have an index option, but maybe I'm missing something?

Short of a simple software tool, tips / thoughts on making a keyword-based spreadsheet or database in Excel and porting that to Word / InDesign would be greatly appreciated, too.

Adobe InDesign tutorials are located here and include a couple that explain building an index from a long document. You could also look into using a database like Bento.
