Poor little kitty wants a home
December 19, 2010 7:14 AM

I've been spending the weekend at my house that's about to be foreclosed on because I'm visiting some friends and there is a poor beautiful kitty who has been meowing outside to be let inside. I'm pretty sure she's a stray -- she's got some chunks of fur missing from what looks to be a fight that are scabbed over. I am only here for the weekend and I head back to California soon, and there is absolutely no way I can keep her -- there's no way to get her to California and I already have two cats.

I'm trying to find a home for her in the next 24 hours before I leave, but I suspect it's going to be an uphill battle. Does anybody know of no-kill rescue organizations or other ideas so I can avoid taking her to the pound? Bonus points if they're open today. I'm in mid-Michigan (Lansing, to be more precise).

I don't know where you are, exactly, but you might want to know about the Mid-Michigan Cat Rescue Inc., no-kill shelter at 1117 Tulip St., Grand Ledge, MI 48837; Phone: 517-622-4653.

I hope you find her a spot, though! Good luck!

Rescue groups in Lansing (from Petfinder.com)

Unfortunately, their search system doesn't let you specify organizations that take cats, so this list may include dog-specific groups.

Is there a trusted neighbor you could leave her with temporarily in case you don't find a spot today? You can keep trying from home, and then the neighbor can deliver her later. Or maybe the neighbor can take her to a vet tomorrow to get scanned for a microchip. Almost any vet will do this on the spot for free, although it's probably better to call first.

Can you let her inside for now? If you can get a closer look, maybe you will find a collar with ID. Also, Petfinder has a Lost Pet section.

Check for lost cat fliers around town?

FYI, when female stray cats suddenly desperately want to move in with you, that's often a sign that they're pregnant. Something to keep in mind if you foist her off on someone you know.

true but - it's pretty far out of "kitten season" in michigan. she probably just wants in cuz it's cold.

If she's pregnant, she's in the very early stages. Frankly, I just think she was freezing her butt off and had a home in the recent past -- she's not skin and bones yet and she certainly should be at this time of year in Michigan. I'm going to try that first shelter in the morning.
