What events / meetups / groups etc might be useful for a young freelance print designer in Chicago to network with other designers, learn about the local design scene, hear about opportunities, etc.?

This might go without saying but have you checked out the Chicago chapter of AIGA? Events are cheaper if you're a member, but you don't have to be.

Yayhooray is a discussion board populated by quite a few local designers, print and web. It was founded by the Skinnycorp guys, and is frequently NSFW.

Chicago Printmakers Collaborative is another type of print design altogether, but might be of interest to you. The Post Family hosts frequent events that draw from the print design and arts communities.
