Ms. Vegetable is looking for some string to make bracelets.

I was inspired by some hippies and deckhands. These are not intended to be taken off for a long time once put on.

Required property 1: Not leather.
Required property 2: I want to fuse the ends (i.e. melt them slightly and have them meld together) instead of tying a knot.
Required property 3: Color black.
Preferred property 4: Softish to touch (I find twine to be harsh).

I found waxed cotton and bamboo and hemp, but I don't know if they have property 2. I found paracord, but I can't find a place to touch it, so I'm not sure that's it.

My googlefu is failing me - I don't know what words to use. Any ideas?

Natural fibres don't melt. Paracord ... might do, but I don't have any so can't check. It's synthetic, anyway, so that's a start.

Generally the stuff that melts is nylon, and the stuff that people make bracelets out of is cotton embroidery floss that they buy at Michael's.

Response by poster: I definitely do not want cotton embroidery floss. The flat nylon stuff used for lanyards at summer camp isn't it, either.

Thanks, though!

Paracord really may be your best bet...its softish....not silky but its not rough like say a natural hemp rope. I have just started getting into making prarcord bracelets and such and found it is a fun hobby plus you end up with a useful strand of really strong rope around your wrist.

Best answer: Paracord bracelets.

From experience, I can tell you paracord will melt and fuse together. Be gentle though, because it will catch fire if you hold a lighter too close.

It's also called 550 cord because each strand will hold 550 pounds.

Best answer: This cord store actually specifies which of their products can be "heat sealed," which I assume means fused together using heat. For example, Chinese knotting cord.
