4 months to kill on Toronto?

I am an Australian who will be living in Toronto for 4 months later this year, as my partner is studying there for 1 semester. I am post 31 so can't get a travel/work visa. So I'm looking for suggestions on how could use my 4 months there?

I would like to work so I can earn some extra money, but since that is probably not going to happen I was thinking I could do some volunteer work, study or something similar. Any suggestions or advice would be great?

If you're looking for volunteer work, the disabled sailing association of Ontario lets you take people out on boats and if no one else is using them, often you can use them yourself. (If you don't know how to sail, they train volunteers for a fee).

If you could feel like self-directed study, Toronto has many swell libraries. Really, they're great.

That's a pretty broad question, do you have any specific areas of interest?

There are lots of places that won't take volunteers for less than a one year commitment, but there are lots that will. Volunteer Toronto maintains a database of available opportunities, and you can search it for short term commitments.

Toronto is home to a large number of universities and colleges and educational programs of all kinds -- you could probably study just about anything here, depending on your interests and willingness to pay.
