Make a denim impression

I've got a new pair of raw denim jeans, help me find something cool and distinct to put in a pocket in order to leave an impression after wearing them for a while.

I'm looking for something with a recognizable shape and sized to fit either in the coin pocket or back left pocket. I'm a photographer who's into gadgets and good movies and comic books.

Best answer: A big metal gear or sprocket.

I'd use a wrench, but that seems kind of uncomfortable. How long will you have to keep the item in the pocket?

I've heard that you can put an object (phone, wallet, etc.) in your jeans pocket then lightly sand it to leave a wear mark. This would significantly speed up the process. (Just a thought, which you've probably had before.)

Brass knuckles.

Response by poster: Brass knuckles would certainly make a cool impression, but I'm not nearly gangstar enough and I've honestly never even punched a stranger.

I'll probably be wearing them for 12+ months before washing.

How about a little mini bottle of Febreze?

If you want to go retro: Back when raw Levis 501s were the denim of choice (beginning in the early-to-mid-80s) cans of Skoal were all the rage for creating pocket impressions, even for non-chewers.

Ooh! Selvage!

Uh, anyway: a small film reel?

Definitely not an old Nokia phone.

I still have a crush on the guy from school with a harmonica fade in his pocket.

Brass knuckles are a "prohibited weapon" in Canada. I don't know much about Canadian law, but I suspect that means you can't have them. Also, the wear pattern itself may invite hassles from the cops, depending.

Best answer: the mounting bracket that holds 35m film for an enlarger head. It's about 4" diameter, should fit in the pocket, and if you orient it the same every time, the inner rectangle should become as prominent as the outside circle. Definitely old-school, and an in-group sign.

Seconding the harmonica fade. That makes me smile just thinking about it.

Best answer: Find a couple of 2x2 plastic 35mm slide mounts, glue them together and try the light sanding thing that 47triple2 suggested.

Regular Snus users often end up with an imprint on their jeans pocket from the tin. On investigation, Snus turns out to be the Swedish version of Skoal

I came back to read this again and again, and because it reminds me of one of my favourite impressions -

I worked at a drycleaner for years, and a very old gentleman customer (seriously, he was like this guy) would come in for his trousers, and would pull out the shabbiest old brown leather wallet you could imagine. The outside had flaking edges and greasy hand stains, and it was barely held together at the fold; and by the end of my years there, it was wrapped with a rubber band to keep it together. Every time he opened it, with crepe-skinned, veined, shaking hands - (he paid cash, you know - pre-debit card days!), I'd see it there, slightly protruding and worn stark white against the darker brown inside: The circular impression of a condom, always at the ready - never used.
