I found out today that my job as a supervisor with a major electronics retailer is being eliminated. Help me understand unemployment in Illinois.

I was offered a pay cut and demotion today, or I can take a 10 week paid severance package. I decided to cut my losses and run before the May 9 deadline. However, can someone help me understand how unemployment will work? I know this is a question for my HR person, but I thought some of you may have insight into my situation. I'm in Chicago, if that helps.

I did this (in Illinois) starting last fall. Once the severance period is up, you can sign up online:

http://www.ides.state.il.us/

I recommend setting up direct deposit, as the alternative is a special debit card, which sounds obnoxious.

Once you're signed up, you telephone in every 2 weeks to answer some questions. No actual human contact required!
