Cannot shut down OSX 10.5.6?

Desktop G5 under 10.5.6 cannot shut down?

recently my G5 Tower running 10.5.6 has lost its ability to shut down.

When I issue the shut down command I am greeted after a few minutes by a "unable to time out" dialog box. It is not always the same program, but no matter what I do I cannot get the computer to shut down. Even if all the programs are closed, even the finder.

I have run many maintenance programs such as Onyx, Cocktail, Xupport, TechTool Pro 5, but the problem persists.

The only change I recently made which I believe is related to the issue is that I added and Airdisk to my Airport Extreme and created and auto login time in the Accounts/Login items of that disk.

Any thoughts?

Do you have any programs set to start on login?

I had a user who had her mail, cal, FF, etc. set to start on login on Tiger, when she was upgraded to Leopard, her machine wouldn't shut down properly. We removed all of the programs from startup, the machine shut down fine. We were then able to put them back, and machine continued to shut down properly.

Response by poster: Thanks, I am not home right now, there are some auto start items such as Default Folder that I can certainly try turning off then on again.

Hi,
If you have any, disconnect all peripherals and remove all PCI cards. Test it. If you have another drive with an OS on it boot from it. Test it. If you have another PowerPC (G3, G4, G5) Start it in Target Disk mode and boot the G5 from that. That will help you determine if it is a hardware or software issue.
What is the exact "Time Out" message? have a look at Activity monitor to see if you have any suspicious background processes operating at shutdown.

Good Luck

Also...
Startup in "Safe Mode" (hold shift key at startup) see if it can shutdown properly than.

Response by poster: I think the login items are the culprit. Turns out the issue is happening on my laptop as well. Must be something I added recently, though I must admit I have had shutdown issues in the past.

I am adding a few items back at a time an certainly doing without anything that I do not use.

Will report back.

Response by poster: Yes, it is certainly due to a login item, I think it is the EXT USB HDD I have attached to my Airport Extreme, I was trying to find a way to make it auto mount because it was not doing so.

So...any thoughts on that specifically I would love to hear.
