For all those beautiful bulemics out there, this song goes out to YOU!
February 2, 2009 5:57 PM

A close friend and I are embarking on a collegiate radio adventure through the wrist-slittingly fun world of teenage problems and angst. We're developing a list of musical sub-themes and came to one we like in theory but don't have much material for: Eating Disorders! Does anyone know of any (any) any (any) songs about Eating Disorders? Please share!

I believe "Ellen West" by Throwing Muses might work.

But, you know, making light of eating disorders -- and "all those beautiful bulemics out there" = SUPER KLASSY

The Tori Amos song "Jackie's Strength" 2nd verse:

Stickers licked on lunch boxes
Worshipping David Cassidy
Yeah I mooned him once
On Donna's box
She's still in recovery
Sleep-overs Beene's got some pot
You're only popular with anorexia
So I turn myself inside out
In hope someone will see, will see

Does it need to be the whole song? Because I'm thinking of:

I didn't eat yesterday
I'm not going to eat today
And I'm not going to eat tomorrow
Because I'm gonna be a supermodel

And if you really need to fill some space, there's that one line in "For Reverend Green" by Animal Collective that goes "From sugared teats to honeyed pests / bulimic vegetarian wins weight contest" or something like that.

Belle and Sebastian's String Bean Jean.

She asked me "Do I need to lose a bit of weight?"
And I told her "Don't be stupid 'cause you're looking great"
And I call her String Bean Jean because the label on her jeans says
Seven to eight years old - well that's pretty small

Losing Game, by Cosy Sheridan

It's more about growing to accept your body as-is, and I don't know how the sound (very C-F-G kind of women's folk) would play on a college stations. But, you did say any (any) any (any).

Cheeseburger in Paradise, by Jimmy Buffet.

Tried to amend my carnivorous habits
Made it nearly seventy days
Losin' weight without speed, eatin' sunflower seeds
Drinkin' lots of carrot juice and soakin' up rays

But at night i'd had these wonderful dreams
Some kind of sensuous treat
Not zuchinni, fettucini or bulghar wheat
But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat

Of course now it might look like a different kind of disorder.

And of course the Garbage song "Bleed Like Me" covers a whole host of angst issues, but the first verse:

Avalanche is sullen and too thin
She starves herself to rid herself of sin
And the kick is so divine when she sees bones beneath her skin
And she says:
Hey baby can you bleed like me?
C'mon baby can you bleed like me?

2nd verse of The Matches - Sick Little Suicide

Mark my words, oh, just a little more, Sarah said,
and subtly subsistence is suicide.
Exercise and malnutrition keep curves tight,
'cause all that matters is what's outside.
So says every magazine cover
which gallantly assaults
our own women and children,
but it's not my fault, It's never my fault.
We dare bury our three-square fare
in a twenty-first century artery,
And feed beyond our need
so pardon me, this part of me.
