Don't stop in Gary, Indiana.

I'm going on a road trip from NYC to Chicago, then to DC, then back to NYC. I have plenty of time for stopovers and I'd like to see more than I-80. What should I stop to do during this trip?

I've already been warned not to stop in Gary, Indiana.

I'm a foodie and would totally dig a side-trip that involves finding the best [food] in [place].

Photography is a serious hobby for me, so suggestions in this vein are welcomed.

I'm a city guy, born and raised. Things that are way off the beaten path are fascinating to me. Interpret this any way you like.

Then you should stop in Cleveland (about 45 minutes north of I-80) and visit Michael Symon's Lola and the West Side Market.

Best answer: I'm from Chicago and went to undergrad in Virginia so I've done the Chicago/DC leg of your journey a fair bit. One of my favorite places to stop on my drive between the two is Berkley Springs, WV, which boasts the country's first spa. It's a big draw for artists so there are some great little shops and galleries as well as cute places to eat and lots of history.

It's about 90 minutes from the DC area (with no traffic, so prepare accordingly) so it might be too close to your destination for a pit stop, but it's really a great little town. From 70/76 I used to take a little detour on Rt. 522 b/c it's more picturesque and I can only handle so many hours of interstate. Not sure how this would work with your ultimate route, but you really can't find a cuter place to get a bite to eat. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the place I used to stop for lunch, but it was right on the main street and they harvested a lot of their fruits and veggies from their own garden.

After doing some soul searching, Tari's Cafe seems to be the place I would stop for lunch.

Visit Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor, MI. Then take I-94 across Michigan and take some pictures of the scenery at Warren Dunes State Park.

Visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water. You should be able to take some great pictures there.
