Are there any sites similar to the old UBL.com?

Before Artistdirect took over ubl.com, I really enjoyed the way it gave short biographies/histories of bands and artists, and also the producers and engineers that worked with each group on each album. Everything was cross-referenced, so that if I liked the sound of a particular album, I could look at other albums by the same producer and see if I liked their style, and so forth. It was a great resource for finding new bands and sounds, using groups I already liked as a jump-off point. There were also 30-second clips of the music tracks for previewing. I use Pandora.com now for finding new artists, but it's a little too random for my tastes, I'd like to find a site where I can be more methodical. Is there anything out there similar to what I'm describing?

This is all available on Allmusic, of course...

last.fm also has a lot of biographical info and 'similar' recommendations that may work for you (I find the 'similar' category to be very subjective)
