app for newsletter sending

Need software to send an opt-in newsletter:

What software should I use to send out a simple newsletter to a list of like 1000 subscribers?
  • Need to send simple mail, text plus some links, maybe a logo, nothing fancy.
  • Have list in text file.
  • Would rather not use an online service, as I don't want to give them the suscriber list, and don't want any adlines added on, and am a control freak.
  • On windows XP, with a DSL connection.
  • I am reasonably handy with a computer, some light programming, have Cygwin installed, etc.
  • Free is nice, as we don't have any financing

I'd recommend Mailman since a newsletter is really a mailing list where only you can post to it.

It may not work with XP (I dunno, maybe it's possible with some mailer in cygwin), though if you have a hosting account pretty much anywhere, it'll be supported. If you have a linux box, even a slow ancient $20 one, it'll do this for you trivially. Plus you could put up a website, etc on your DSL.
