Can anyone recommend a good bed n' breakfast in Puerto Rico?

Hi,

My wife and 9 y/o daughter are planning a trip to PR in August. Can anyone recommend a nice (i.e., clean) and affordable (i.e., around 100 per night) bnb in or around San Juan?

Also if you have any must see, must do San Juan things, feel free to chime in.

Much love.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express near Old San Juan for a night a few weeks ago. $110, clean and pleasant, breakfast included. It's worth noting that Holiday Inn Express cannot be considered a bnb.

Also, I was stranded there for a night by mistake on account of the volcano, so I don't have tourism suggestions... but am anxious to hear others'. Thanks for asking the question, and good luck!

I should add, hotels are good too!

An affordable choice in Old San Juan is a short term rental at La Caleta. The rooms are fairly basic, but the location is tough to beat. You might also want to look at some paradores, or country inns, outside the city. Also on craigslist, a number of people put up their own apartments up for rent for a few days, and you can generally get some great deals.

Any particular reason you want to stick close to San Juan? I think the nicer parts of the island are outside the city. Specifically, I've stayed at Casa Grande, a former coffee plantation about an hour and a half from San Juan that is just stunningly beautiful, and relatively close to both the Arecibo Observatory and the Camuy Caverns (ridiculously beautiful as well.

Another destination I highly recommend is Guanica , where you can enjoy hiking or horse back riding in the dry forest, or diving or snorkelling in the Carribean. I stayed at the Copamarina, during off-peak season, and it didn't have any of the obnoxiousness I normally associate with other places that have "resort" in their title.
