Fun destination ideas for this winter break?

Looking for somewhere fun to go during our winter break (between Christmas and New Year's for about 5 days...two adults). Traveling from the Northeast - Hartford is the most convenient airport for us, but could fly out of Boston or NYC. We're looking for a good value since we know that flights everywhere are at premium prices this time of year. (Basically, a little splurge is ok as long as it's a cool place - I'm just feeling a little uninspired and indecisive and wanted to get some ideas.)
Places I've been and loved for this type of trip this time of year - New Orleans, Key West, Puerto Rico.

Breeze Airlines flies out of Hartford's Bradley Airport to Charleston.

Quebec in winter is awesome, but maybe too cold?

How splurgy are you willing to splurge?
There are destinations that will cost you a little more on airfare, but you might make up for it on lower costs after you get there. Colombia has several possibilities, Cartagena on the coast, MedellĂn in the mountains, probably more places as well. (Note that cheapest fares to Colombia may involve Spirit Airlines, which I try to avoid.)
Antigua, Guatemala is a nice place to stay just outside the big city, and a place you could use as a base to make day trips to nearby sites and activities. Guide would be recommended for exploring the area.
With both Logan and JFK nearby (and even Newark), you're in one of the better areas in the world for getting direct flights. I could suggest places further afield, but they might be a bit more involved than what you're looking for.
