Help me replace my busted hammock
May 22, 2024 6:44 PM   Subscribe

I have a metal hammock stand with a padded fabric hammock that has steel spreader bars and attaches with two chains at each end rather than the more typical 1. The fabric is shot so there's a real risk of making a high speed descent if we use it. How do I find a new one without replacing the stand which is fine?

How should I be searching to find a replacement? Or do you have a suggestion as to who might sell a replacement? I've tried 4 pt replacement hammock, replacement hammock bed and more - no joy.

I bought my mom this one from the terrible site named after a river.I got it in late 2020 and it is still holding up fine. (But now I realize this isn't the type you are looking for. Sorry!)

It looks like a company called Garden Treasures used to make them, but I didn't have any luck figuring out who they are -- they're sold by Lowe's, Target, Wayfair, etc. Does your current one have a brand name on it?

Does searching the term “bridge hammock” help?

Twin Oaks makes hammocks (it's kinda their thing). Though there was a fire recently which affected their factory, they do still have a way to order hammocks

Home Depot sells them, and a vendor I know of (I bought the other style of hammock through them) is Vevor. I had to use the word chain in my query, so "Hammock replacement with chain" worked.

Wow, this is quite a challenge to find a hammock with 4 chains, not 2! I found this but it seems to actually be made for loft beds, so I don't know if the dimensions are right (and it's expensive). Maybe try writing to Algoma who seems to manufacture them, but only wholesale & sold with a stand?

Find a tent-maker who deals with old-style cotton tents (for re-enactments of historical events), send them a few pictures and the dimensions and ask for a price estimate.

Instead of a new hammock, can you sew more fabric on top as a second layer?
Attaching a rope hammock beneath can also act as a support system.
Weight can be an issue.
Stress and damage at the ends can be an issue.

Best answer: I live at Twin Oaks! We don't offer replacement hammock beds of this type but I believe the terminology you're looking for to describe the fabric is a "quilted hammock." Most hammock stands I'm aware of are made for the traditional 2-ring hammocks, but if you can find a source that sells the type of stand you have, they will likely (hopefully?) offer hammocks that fit the stand. If you decide to go DIY with the project, you probably want Sunbrella outdoor fabric -- that's the material that most fabric hammocks are made of.
