Tips for a Breaking Bad road trip

My son is off to college next year, so am wanting to have a father/son road trip in the spring. We've both thoroughly enjoyed Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, so I thought travel to Albuquerque (from WI) would be fun. Tips?

We'd fly and then rent a car to see the location sites, likely the last week in March. Things specifically to check out or to avoid? I've seen guided tours advertised but they seem a little on the opportunistic side when I feel like I can look up the location of the car wash and Twisters, etc., myself.

Although I live in Albuquerque, I haven't been to any of the sites, other than driving past the Crossroads motel regularly. But one thing you should know is that springtime in New Mexico is very windy and unpleasant to be outside, especially in the p.m.

If you do come, I recommend going to Laguna Burger for a green chile cheeseburger.

Electric Playhouse might be fun for a teen.

Petroglyph National Monument, for sure. Never a wasted moment there. Dress for weather.

The Breaking Bad Museum, in the back of the Breaking Bad Store in Old Town is pretty cool, and free. They have some costumes and props from the show. You can definitely DIY the tour, but the RV tour people do a really nice job of everything. It is touristy but I guess that’s sort of the point.

The people who own the White’s house are NOT into people coming by and taking pictures. I guess people try to throw pizzas on the roof? They will sit in the open garage and glare at you. The Twisters that is decorated as Los Pollos Hermanos is way out in what my daughter calls the boonies.

Old Town Albuquerque has some interesting museums, shops, and galleries. My husband works at Ghost Wolf. There is a weird little chapel in patio Escondido. If you want to get out of Albuquerque, stop by Meow Wolf in Santa Fe!

Reading along with interest as we will be in area (East Arizona) and were thinking on a NM detour on the way back to the airport and youngest teen really really liked Breaking Bad, as in, dressed up as Saul today

The last time I was in Albuquerque, we randomly came across an RV tour at an intersection. For what it is worth, the RV was an exact match to the one in the show, and everyone on board looked like they were having a great time. Unless it is crazy expensive, I think it would be a fun addition to your tour.

I just wanted to second that March is a terrible time to visit, the wind tends to be 30 mph with gusts of 50-60mph. And because it’s the desert, there’s so much dust in the air that it’s unpleasant to breathe. Not to mention the sand in your eyes and teeth (and on everything you own if you open a window.)
