Do I need to replace my t.v.?

My remote just went. I checked it using my smart phone. It is not sending a signal. The Samsung t.v. will not turn on using the manual button. Do you have any explanation or is there anything we should check before we replace the t.v.?Thanks.

What model is your tv? Does the remote have a different model number on it?

You mention checking for signal with your phone, which I interpret as using your camera to check for light from an IR diode. Two potential complications:

1. Are you sure your remote is IR? We have an LG, and that remote is radio frequency based (no IR light, ever). I haven’t used a Samsung remote in a few years but I think some of them may be RF too.
2. Are you sure your phone’s camera can see IR? In my experience, iPhones have really solid IR filters (they don’t detect IR remotes), android phones are hit-and-miss depending on the exact camera.

The power button physically on the TV not working is more damning to me, either way. One easy check — is anything else plugged into the same outlet working OK? A lamp is easy to test, as is anything else with a power light. Would stink to spend hundreds or thousands on a TV and find out it’s actually your power strip, or someone turned off the wall switch controlling the outlet your power strip is plugged into (or the switch on the power strip, for that matter).

Have you replaced the remote's batteries?

I don't know about the TV in question here, but my Samsung TV remote does not have batteries that I can access, but it has a small solar panel on the back and a USB socket.

If it truly is the remote, it's likely that a version of a universal remote exists for your tv. Searching for your TV model + remote should bring up either a samsung remote replacement or a universal remote that will work with it. No need to replace the entire TV when all you need is a remote.

Response by poster: Using your suggestions we found that the t.v. is on standby with a steady red light. The remote still does not work but we have one on order. We thank you so much for responding- what a great community.

Logitech killed the Harmony universal remote, but there seems to be some replacements... just not as good.
