Unsmooth the motion on a hotel tv
February 25, 2023 8:12 PM   Subscribe

I am stuck in a hotel room for a week for mandated COVID isolation. The room has an LG TV that has motion smoothing turned on so I can't even improve this situation by watching something good. I appear to have no access to the TV settings for what I guess are understandable reasons. Is there anyway for me to bypass this settings lockdown to make things look Not Terrible?

I realize as complaints about the novel coronavirus go this is less than nothing, but it is nonetheless annoying.

Are there any buttons along the bezel of the TV? On some TVs you can access 'menu' via one button, then go up/down with others and select what you want. Is there any 'setup' button on the remote or similar?

I would complain too - hate that setting! First I would definitely check for buttons on the bezel, but if they don't exist, I would ask the hotel for help. I bet there's a way to unlock it. You could say you want to turn on closed captioning or something if that makes them more likely to help. If you're going to be there a week, you should definitely get started on this.

Do you have a controller at all? Did you look everywhere for another?

I see your tags.

Response by poster: Thank you so much for your help!

No buttons along the bezel.
The remote does have a settings button that the TV recognizes is being pushed, but nothing happens.

It sometimes is the case that the appropriate setting is only available during media playback. If you were to play an episode of something, then try the settings (or Picture, or Menu, or whatever) button then, maybe it would pop up with stuff like contrast, brightness, motion smoothing etc.

Also, if you have a laptop with the appropriate port, you could connect it via cable. That input may not have motion smoothing enabled on it.

Response by poster: Hotel front desk say no dice.

No laptop. I really really wish I had packed differently; thought I'd be traveling light, but then I thought I would be traveling at all.

Response by poster: The TV does have built-in chromecast, but the settings button still doesn't cause anything to happen during playback.

If you can find the model number, maybe we can crowdsource a way to fiddle with the thing. I would definitely be exhausting all options if I was in your position!

Wikihow has a fairly exhaustive list of LG secret menu access options:
Link

A Redditor also suggested that there is a website designed to trigger the settings menu when accessed in an LG TV's built in WebOS web browser, if you have access to that. Try navigating to http://webosapp.club/instart/ and see if you're offered a modal to open a built-in app.

If there isn't direct access to the picture smoothing option from a service menu, there might be way to disable "hotel mode" and let the regular user settings button work again.

Best answer: I was just looking at hotel mode in the "installation guide" PDF from here. It has these instructions:

1 Press the Setting button for more than 5 seconds using the user remote control, banner will appear at top left on the screen.
2 Enter a four digit password and press button.
- The TV is set with the initial password “1-1-0-5”.

Want to bet they didn't change the default?

No idea whether this is applicable here, but there is a “hotel mode” for some TVs. (That’s a random link among many that come up from Googling lg tv hotel mode.)

I actually came across this when looking for a way to turn it on so I could enable volume limiting and keep my kids from blasting it, but maybe you can turn it off!

That’s an LG tv. There are a number of videos demonstrating how to “unlock” it.
Here’s a website with other methods: DIY-time.com/HotelTV

I’m so mad about this so called feature being so ubiquitous, and it makes my world better to know you don’t have to put up with it in addition to covid. Three cheers for askme!!!!
