Japanese (I think...) watercolor paintings

Can you help add context to my framed paintings?

A relative visited China and Japan in the late 50s (or at least that is what I was told), and brought back this art:

Any thoughts on origin, significance, or other general context? We know nothing, so any clue is appreciated. I included close ups of the characters, which I'm guessing are artist signature type marks.

If the pictures are close to 28-29" by 4-5" they may be in the hashira-e format of ukiyo-e. The art looks to me like shin hanga, definitely from the 20th century, but I can't identify the prints or the artist.
