Early '00s minimalist website competition?

Sometime around 2003 I seem to remember some kind of website competition prioritizing smallest file size? And one winner(?) made a faux shopping website with like ASCII art depicting the furniture you could buy? Does this ring a bell to anyone?
I would love to know if any scraps or remnants of the contest or the entrants exist on the web or the WayBack Machine; my web searches have been unsuccessful. Or any other information you may remember and can share would be very satisfying. Thank you!

The winners and short descriptions are browsable via archive.org (2002 winners) but so far "launch entry" isn't working for any of the ones I've tried.

The main thing I remember about the 5k competition was that there was some way to use it to get a backdoor MetaFilter account back when the main signup page was closed. But I never did figure out how.

I didn't know it was annual, I do remember the winner of the 2001 contest vividly, it was a fake porn site called Pixel Chix (or Chicks maybe). It consisted of two very blocky pixel-y looking cartoon women in bikinis laying on the floor mirroring each other's poses like bookends.
