Need health insurance for the summer. Will be working in different places

Because I did not re-sign a contract with my school, my health insurance will end at the end of this month. This summer, I will be living in two different states to work, and then eventually moving permanently to a third state in late August. Should I just chance it and go insurance-less until my contract starts with my new employer in August?

What's the COBRA situation with your current health insurance?

If something happened, you can sometimes call in COBRA after the fact.

Response by poster: COBRA is close to $700 a month, and only covers me in Manhattan. I will be in upstate New York this summer before moving to Oregon.

You can likely get cheap catastrophe insurance on the marketplace. You can talk to one of their reps to hear about your options, and which may provide more benefits for out of network care. Your cobra plan also likely has some out of network coverage, although the rate sucks. Yeah, it's basically insurance in case you need a hospital stay. But you can cancel as soon as your new insurance starts.

My husband had to have an unexpected appendectomy during the summer between finishing college and starting his first full time job. (Actually it happened while we are on our honeymoon.) A high deductible plan saved us from starting married life with a huge bill. So, don't go without any coverage - just in case.

YMMV, but whenever I've bought plans on the Marketplace in WA State, they could be used in multiple states, as in-network plans.

If you work with a Health Insurance Navigator, they can make sure that you will get a plan that will cover you no matter where you go. I'd highly recommend working with a Navigator; they're services to you are free.

Are you positive your insurance starts at the new job in August? Most places I’ve taight have started benefits in October.

Either way, I’d get something on the marketplace. You don’t want to have something awful happen and end up in medical bankruptcy.
