Every day the same again

The British pop band McCarthy published three albums but only one excellent song: From the damned [YT]. If you'd care to recommend similar tunes I'd be "stoked" etc.

I've had the song on repeat while driving and it just gets better and better; The uneven mixing and levels, the dubbed song, the noise. I can't put my ear on why I like this song so much, but the despair and anger are just right - an impassive voice contrasting the instruments. The rest of their discog is pap imho – which is curious in itself – but it's left me hanging. Suggestions for bands or tracks much appreciated!

You probably already know that McCarthy more or less became Stereolab. Stereolab has a whole extensive discography to get your head around - they were one of my favourite bands of the 90s & there's a huge variety of styles in there from drone-pop to chanson to Brazilian-styled tropicana - but closest to the McCarthy sound maybe are tracks like Changer or The Light that Will Cease to Fail or John Cage Bubblegum, all of which I could listen to all day long. Try either of the first two Switched On compilations for an overview - there's a third one too, but that's more based on their later sound.

You might also like Veronica Falls.

I like Taxi by The Author - afaik it's one of their only song but it's a blinder.

Here's a live gig.

Even *gasps* Red Sleeping Beauty?

Response by poster: Veronica Falls was nice, and The Author is great - hadn't heard those before. The Stereolab tracks veer more towards shoegaze/dreampop – which is fine and dandy – but doesn't have the oomph I'm looking for. I haven't listed to much of them though, so will give them a listen.

Red Sleeping Beauty is ok, I guess, but it's a bit too bland. Like one of those nondescript REM albums. Perhaps better to go at it from the other angle - "softer Melt Banana" rather than "angrier indie"?

How would you describe the McCarthy track btw? band-matching follows their general œuvre rather than this song, so I'm having a hard time "finding similar".

How would you describe the McCarthy track btw?

It feels like the C90/jangly stuff McCarthy are known for with an added post-punk vibe. In terms of the energy and instrumentation, perhaps some Wedding Present would fit? A touch darker/less melodic, but with that energy, I'd try for Wire's 154 or even Brian Eno's Third Uncle.

The feedback wash at the end is strongly evoking another song, but it's escaped me because I now have Third Uncle on loud.

I wish I had time to find you specific track recommendations, but the sound reminds me some of songs from The Jesus and Mary Chain or My Bloody Valentine (especially, say, 1987-1989 era). Maybe not enough despair or anger, though.

Maybe some faster / heavier post-rock will scratch the itch? My first thought was Battles. This Reddit thread might have something for you: Fast Postrock? Does such a thing exist?
(And So I Watch You From Afar seem promising.)

Based solely on the sound of From the Damned, I'm going to recommend Over The Edge by the Wipers. More or less all their songs scratch the same sort of itch.

This was my first thought but it might be too much like Red Sleeping Beauty for your liking: The Lines' Nerve Pylon starts nicely and then just keeps getting better until it achieves magnificence at about 02:10.

These ones don't have the same atmospheric tone but they could be cousins - Slowly Goes by The Welcome Mat and Take by John Butler Trio.

You could try a bit of contemporaneous NZ/Dunedin scene stuff, e.g. early Straitjacket Fits. A track like Hail, maybe.
