Hiking along Austria's Semmering Railway

I'm in Vienna for a few more days, and want to ride the best parts of the Semmering railway, hop off the train, hike about 10km back towards Vienna along the Semmering railway hiking route, and then catch a train back to Vienna at a different station.

However, My German is nicht sehr gut, and am having trouble with a couple questions.

1. Which departure station from Vienna do I want? Which destination should I ask for? I understand the trip is about 2 hours, and want to leave Vienna by 8.

2. Will there be ample villages with food sand water along the trail?

3. Where should I hop back on the train, and when would be the last train back to Vienna?

I think that is all! Danke!

Best answer: The Station to depart is Hauptbahnhof, go to "Semmering". Here is the timetable However, there is work being done on the railway system between 11 September and 13 October, so passengers are transferrred to busses between the parts that are currently sectioned off for works. So you can go to Semmering Bahnhof but partly by bus.

I found a flyer about the hiking trail but it is in German only, but perhaps still of use because it contains a map

it does contain all the info you need (places to eat, stops to board at etc) but in German. If you find someone to translate it, what you need is the info in blue on "der Bahnwanderweg in Niederösterreich" ignore the green part, it deals with the Styrian part which is further than 2 hours from Vienna.

You could call here:
May to October daily 9 - 15 Uhr
Tel. +43/2664/845 20
www.semmeringbahn.at
or also here:
Tourismusbüro Semmering, Telefon +43 (0) 2664 20025, tourismus@semmering.gv.at
Not sure if English is spoken but assume they will try.

Alternatively, if you are in Vienna now, visit the info center at Hauptbahnhof, they also should be able to help you.
