Downloading iTunes

iTunes filter: I want iTunes 6; it doesn't want me.
I'm running Windows XP Home edition w/the Service 2 pack. iTunes 6 will start downloading, but then "hang" somewhere around 1.2 MB. I've tried downloading the freestanding Quicktime 7.0.3 installer--identical problem. Meanwhile, Windows Update & my various other automatic update programs work fine. The problems persist despite uninstalling an earlier version of Quicktime, removing earlier failed setup attempts, turning off the firewall, making sure the firewall isn't blocking ports, etc. I've already checked AskMefi, the iPod Lounge forum & Microsoft's iTunes troubleshooting page. Help!

Response by poster: 1) I don't have any version of iTunes installed on this computer.
2) I've tried running the installation through Mozilla 1.7; IE 5; and Mozilla Firefox 1.5. Same result every time.
3) DSL connection.

I'll assume by 'running the installation' you mean 'downloading the file' and continue accordingly.
The problem lies in what's the same eveytime - not what's different. So if you've eliminatd the browser and the firewall the your problem seems to be in the internet connection.
Perhaps your router/dsl modem needs to be reset. Perhaps your provider doesn't like apple, or perhaps you're over your bandwidth allocation for the month and they're 'shaping' (aka slowing) your bandwidth. Try dowloading some other file (say a random program from download.com) and see if the problem persists. Try varying one thing at a time until it you get a different behaviour.

This could be a result of a MTU set wrong. You might try using a download manager (such as DAP or Flashget) that can resume the transfer.

It may sound strange, but try emptying the browser cache.

What Ervin said. Run Windows Cleanup too, and perhaps Defragment. Reboot. Try again. I would do these before anything else.

Not quite what you asked, but I wanted to make sure you've already looked at the Apple support forums for iTunes 6 for Windows.
I mention this only because I downloaded iTunes 6, and wish I hadn't. v5 worked fine, but 6 is riddled with bugs. Of course, my main problem (error 2122, prevents me from burning discs at all) is a hardware conflict that is being experienced by everyone with the same Dell setup that I have. It might not affect you. But before you invest a lot of time in v6, please check out the issues that have been plaguing it.
